Most schools can’t match A&M fan base. College Station is a college town whose entire identy is A&M. There’s nothing else to do there but support the University so students end up with a close relationship with each other and with athletics. It’s apples and oranges comparing us to them.
Even Austin was sort of a college town too until like 25-30 years ago. They have a lot of support from old heads and legacies.
If there’s any school we should aim to replicate, it should be USC. The 2nd largest city in the US (Houston right behind them at 3 or 4). LA has similar, maybe even worse, traffic issues. They also have a ton of competing forms of sports entertainment. 2 NBA teams and now 2 NFL teams.
USC’s average attendance the last 4 years has been 63k+.
We’re playing catch-up though with those SWC deal, but I don’t think it’s impossible. We should at least aim to have the 3rd most football attendance in the state, behind UT and A&M.
This. It’s not so much about the number at the end of the day but the atmosphere that the fans create. Obviously, more fans makes it easier to create more atmosphere.
UT has been doing less with more for years….could not give a crap about them.
I’m happy for A&M to be doing so well this year……those fans have been in purgatory for 50 years.

At least the current system allows us to find donors that will be able to compete against them. Signing that so called charlatan agreement puts us back pre NIL. While we did the same thing as both uta and atm we got hammered by probations while they got a slap on the arse. It is crucial that we do not sign this deal. Imagine Fertitta deciding to do the same thing as the teetech donor or someone else. They want to do it? More power to them.
I meant that USC is similar to us location wise. It is pretty close to downtown LA, while UCLA is further out. So regardless of private or public, people are still driving through traffic into downtown LA to attend USC games. The various other sports teams does impact both schools though.
The issue is that we have to somehow convince very talented players that coming here won’t lower your NFL opportunities like it has for our very talented 5 Star QB Connor Weigman. We also have no money to spend on talent. We need to pay to get stars from the portal and we need to pay our guy Connor to stay and convince him we are not going to ruin his chances of going to the next level. Kids talk and reputation of Houston football is kill the clock and maybe throw a slant. Good luck to our 2026 Class. What is the percentage of this class staying to the end?
Amare Thomas & Tanner Koziol have put up good stats. They’re exciting players
Its hard to to drop back to pass 40+ times a game with a poor Offensive Line
1 stupid holding penalty or sack, the drive is over.
I think Willie “style” will get more interesting with better talent
Kliff Kingsbury had a fun style. Didnt work. Couldn’t play defense. Didnt have a winning culture
I could write a whole blog on how much I like Willie. We lost Shiel Wood, cause of money ($$). Could have been devastating. Went & hired Austin Armstrong, great hire
I can write a huge blog on how it would be nice to have thanksgiving with him as well, but times are changing and social media speaks to our recruits and the no one with real talent wants to come here… and if they do we are not paying them. Also 1 penalty or sack shouldn’t mean we kneel the ball the rest of the game. Kliff Kingsbury may not win, but people were excited because of what could happen. Not a winning culture but the possibility of putting up big yards and getting to the next level was always there with Kliff. Just look at Fritz he stayed at Tulane forever because his focus was to keep his job, no one was banging down his door to coach at any of the big schools, because he coaches not to lose. Kids see that. But yes I like him to as a person, but not to build hope in recruits. I doubt he will be here in 3 years.
