Maybe not the best, but I agree, it is better than most when traveling across the state.
I hear horror stories by many in the north central and north east US. I’ve driven almost every state west of the Mississippi, much of the south and gulf coast.

Thanks for the update. That must be at least somewhat recent.
Funding for highways in Texas is a state/federal partnership. The state portion is primarily funded by motor fuel tax and vehicle registration. Since Texas generates more revenue because of a larger population, it has more money to spend. Of course, there is more land and highways to maintain. I know there is concern that the growth of electric vehicles reduces revenue from fuel tax, but that is a discussion for another day.
I unfortunately live in Missouri at the moment.
The roads here are God awful. Texas roads are a blessing from God in comparison.
Beat me to it.
Also, USF as AAU should be just the kick in the butt we need to get moving. If they can make, so can we.
GWU is an overrated and overpriced school. Never been particularly impressed with its grads. The fact that it got in over Georgetown just adds fuel to the fire of many that the AAU has become an overpriced old boys club. I mean, Georgetown is not in but Oregon and Mizzou are? Who actually buys this?
I think its a boondoggle. Bunch of No Homers.
GW must have more research than GTown or focus more on Pell Grants.
GW is home to more than 100 research centers and institutes , spanning the academic disciplines. Students work side-by-side with faculty mentors on cutting-edge research projects.
I know one person that went to GW. She couldn’t handle the competition and transferred to UTSA and achieved a 4.0 GPA. GTown seems on par with Northwestern or Duke in terms of academics.
Better half and I are currently driving from Houston to Vermont. Think Texas roads are bad? Mississippi and especially ‘Bammer are f’n awful. Third world.
Tennessee is on par with us. It’s easy to see how Virginia has sucked on the federal tit big time, great highways in the blue ridge and Shenandoah valley
Yeah for sure. I have driven through Ole Miss more times than I would like and its roads suck!!
That is why I try to always take the route from Atlanta that takes you along I-10 through Bay St. Louis and then Nee Orleans; that way I only have to spend like 60 miles in MS. One time we took the I-20 route from Dallas to Atlanta, and had the joy of experiencing the real MS and its roads. Argh!! No thanks.
No question GWU is known for its engineering programs, as well as its political science and law schools.
However I ask this question:
If you asked anyone in a position of hiring, whose resume would they consider first, a GWU engineering grad or a VaTech engineering grad? The answer is clear. If you are going to let in the University of Miami, why in the heck is VaTech not in?
Again, the AAU is a boondoggle now. It wasn’t always this way, but it is turning into a new version of the USNWR college guide.
I’m guessing that a big chunk of VaTech’s research dollars are agricultural, and as we know from Nebraska, the AAU frowns on that as non-competitive and non-peer reviewed.
I’m the wrong guy to ask about hiring. I just hired an accountant from Fresno State and the Coog turned me down so he can stay 100% remote. I’d definitely hire a GW poli science major over VA Tech or USF.
You know that is a good point; my understanding is that a fair amount of VaTech’s R&D dollars are defense and health care related. I will need to check that out.
Also, unlike Iowa State and Nebraska, or for that matter Purdue, VaTech has a medical school.
Can’t disagree there. There is an advantage to having a campus next to the State Department!.
Domers don’t need any help academically.
Let me ask you all a question.
How many of you have had your lives hampered because UH was not a member of AAU?
As Livia Soprano would say “It’s all a big nothing”
It should be something ALL UH alums want to obtain.
It puts our beloved University in an elite class and yes, our own individual contributions and sacrifices to get a degree should matter.
…and yes this is a personal honor for all of us that attended the University of Houston
Fair question. My life has been fine without UH being a part of AAU. However, if you want UH to offer the best education to its students, attract the best teachers, provide research to improve the community and society in general and provide the university with additional funding and prestige, everyone should want UH to be a part of AAU.
It’s not about any one individual; it’s about transforming the university I graduated from be the best that it can be.
