AAU Adds 6 New Members

Of course I want it for UH. I want everything for UH.

However, research dollars are much more important then a designation.

No one posting here has been hurt by UH not being a more prestigious university.

And the citizens of Texas haven’t suffered either.

And even though I’m a proponent of other states investing their money in educating our citizens, UH students in the future will definitely benefit from having the designation.

UH students don’t get hired for some jobs because of it.

Don’t worry, a good number of our alums send their kids to other schools besides UH while they also complain why we have a small fanbase compared to other schools.

Georgia deserves it more than USF.
With Riverside in, Pell Grants seem to be a driving factor.
Looks like Wake will be R1 very soon.

Yep
they boast UH but there is NO WAY they’d send THEIR children to the University of Houston.

An AAU designation will definitely help but it’s not the only thing
we need to develop around the campus.

We weren’t even on the radar of those that barely missed out

UH does have over 250mil though.

I don’t think alumni whose kids go to other schools complain about our fan base. We already know it’s fickle and small.

Gang,

I have six alma maters.

Two of them are AAU.

But I have a little secret.

The three that were the most academically challenging

were all NON-AAU.

I’ve been purely on the train that the Ward needs some serious development. Would benefit both UH and TSU.

I concur.

The “de-slumification” of the 3rd Ward should be a high priority.

The political nonsense is unfortunate.

Do we want OUR city to be nice or do we want OUR city to be a dilapidated mess?

How can anyone legitimately defend it remaining subpar?

As I stated before, Rockefeller Center was built in a “Third Ward” part of Manhattan.

Now it is a crown jewel of the city.

We need a City Centre type of quality development adjacent to the University of Houston/TSU
just like most other big time campuses

The fact that it would benefit to UH is enough for the aggy and whorn who are the mucky mucks in local politics to not see it as we do.

Third Ward is just fine to them.

Who defends remaining sub par?

The problem I see is that developers don’t see enough of a return on their investment to develop the third ward around the University. There was obviously some obvious return on the other side of 45 since that’s being developed pretty well.

No problem I see is that the infrastructure in the city of Houston in general is getting worse. There’s always been a problem with litter and trash, but I’ve noticed that it’s increased dramatically over the past several years.

And despite what the mayor says about crime being down, the public perception is opposite. And not even crime, per se, but general unruliness. Just a Drive westheimer between the beltway and Hillcroft in the evenings, especially weekends.

Sheila Jackson and other politicians have been quite vocal at intimidating developers from big type developments in the Third Ward.

Also, Senator Whitmire has been more than vocal about his attempts to sabotage UH’s efforts to become a more traditional campus.

Developing 3rd Ward should have been done before East Downtown and Midtown got improved, which is 15 years too late.

Not to mention half of our students hang out in Midtown or East Downtown anyways.

Plus a majority of our fanbase only drive into town for football and basketball games and no prospective business can depend solely on fans of UH athletics for a steady revenue stream.

Curious, but does improving the 3rd ward mean bringing in developers, new businesses, and new residents? or what if there was a way to work with the people there to improve incomes for them, training opportunities, and see if they improve their homes with better income?

You know I just re-read the list and don’t know how I missed Arizona State being admitted to the AAU. This right there proves it has become a joke. ASU is a party school and half of its student body attends online.

What in gods name is going on at the AAU? Are people just buying their way in now?

It’s like a formerly exclusive golf club that spent a bunch of money on renovations just when everyone stopped playing golf. So they lower their standards and prices to get revenue. At some point the allure of even being a member begins to go away.

Many politicians don’t want that
