This board can be so negative. The new DC is not going to come in and change the whole philosophy. He is going to run Fritzs philosophy. Also the defense coming back has alot of talent and Fritz will run a defense based on that talent just like he did this past year. It is becoming more and more evident that Fritz is very involved with defense. Another reason that led to Woods departure, is that Fritz was heavily involved in the defensive scheming, and Woods would could of been calling plays based on what Fritz wanted. Maybe Fritz and UH thought it wasnt good to over pay for a DC when he was just a in name only DC with Fritz having a big say in the defense.

CWF know better than any of us here on Coogfans on what fits his vision and his squad. The fact #20 Wilson came back is very telling to me. Results will tell us if Mr. Armstrong was a good hire. Everything else is pure speculation.
Totally agree! Fritz is a defensive minded HC who always puts together good defenses. He is more responsible for that great defense last year than Wood, i suspect. Florida coach is very young, and i think willing for CWF to have a big say about our defense…He fits what we need…2 of our guys who were in portal have come back after his hire…GOOD sign…
I like the pick. Young guy, seems to bring energy plus the players enjoy playing for him and can recruit. Seems to be extremely successful for his age so this isn’t a 50-60 year old coach that flamed out in the SEC as a coordinator this is a young guy still learning and improving.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think Shiel Wood will be a noticeable loss and I don’t think our defense sees a drop. Wood benefited from Houston’s weak offense last year. How many games did the other team dial down their aggressiveness offensively once they got up a few scores? First off, Wood had no answers for Kansas who put up 42 on us. Cincinnati beat us what was it 30 something to 0? Iowa State 20 to 0? Some of those teams shut it down offensively
I think the important thing for Coogfans is we hired someone that we can make fun of his looks as soon as we give up a TD. That’s gold for message board activity
The more I think about it, the more I think CWF, being the defensive-minded HC he is, wanted a young, coachable DC that he could “mold”. As opposed to the older DC who is stuck in his ways & always has a foot out the door.
Coach Armstrong being just 31 years old, having SEC coordinator experience, & just needing a little bit of tutelage, was probably a very intriguing option for CWF. He’ll call plays, but he’d be running CWF’s defense the way HE wants it run. CFW would essentially be the defensive coordinator in all aspects besides play calling.
It would be interesting to read how a head coach finds and selects their coaches from such a large pool. Did CWF find him through his network? Did a recruiter place the coach? Did the coach apply for the job?
Not sure about the answer to either of those questions. I can only guess that Willie hand picked this guy bc of the reasons I listed above. I wonder what CWF saw in him over all the G5 DCs that were available for poaching.
Lots of talk on this board about why Armstrong left Florida. I am not going to bother with the nitty gritty details about his departure, but my expectation is for Fritz to fully understand the background of the departure, address head-on any red flags, and feel comfortable with the hire.
