Big 12 eyeing PAC 12 schools for future expansion

You’re right but aren’t they getting ready to have another meeting in the future reviewing the bylaws?

Yes, that article I mentioned touches on that. It pretty much said that no one of the governing board is considering or has any reason to strip the designation.

There’s no point if the main goal is to expand the playoff. P5/A5 it won’t matter.

All that matters now is how much money your conference gets per year.

Kinda sad really but money is moving all the pieces in conference realignment. And this time, I think the Coogs got in at just the right time.

That is why their new commissioner said.
“We won’t expand at this time”
“At this time” was not said because they won’t expand in the future. It opens the door for possible future expansion. This is what I expect from a “savvy” businessman. It precisely has the possibility to answer your point. We/UH represents that expansion into the central time zone.
Coogfans posters were all certain (including me) that the utau pimp would not relocate. He and his entourage did. 2023/2024 is just a few months away. We just have to wait. We are in a much better situation having accepted an invite to the BIG12 than not getting one.

Even if they are, they’re probably not inclined to reduce their number to a significant minority.

Big12 folks have been throwing this out there for quite some time.

Not having Austin involved is both plus and minus. Programs don’t like working with them but they bring in a lot of revenue/eyes/etc…

That being said, I find it highly unlikely any team moves from PAC to Big12 UNLESS the new PAC tv deal is complete trash and the new Big12 deal is substantially better.

<1% chance any PAC team moves to Big12

The two teams that make sense are Colorado and Utah. They get to play games in the central and eastern time zones, get a foot in Texas for recruiting. Colorado was once a Biig 8 member. Utah would have the natural rivalry of BYU .And remember the Big 12 also trademarked the name big 14.

I would love a road trip to Boulder and see the Rocky Mountains.

Only way I see the Mountain Time Zone Pac 12 schools coming east to the Big 12 is if the Big 10 raids the Pac 12 for USC and friends.

Otherwise, why leave a venerable, stable league who could poach TCU and Houston anytime it wanted to join a johnny come lately revolving door league where half of the original members have left for greener pastures.

Especially when the money is similar or worse.

I’m sure Bowlsby would love to add Arizona, Az St, Utah and Colorado. But they aren’t looking.

So does the Big 12 hold its nose academically and grab Memphis and Boise to solidify itself in terms of New Year’s football bowl appearances over the last 15 years? Or does it stop at 12 for the time being?

I am a proponent of never adding unless its an emergency. Why reduce your net worth per school voluntarily?

I’m constantly amazed at how people underrate the PAC 12. It’s a very solid conference that fits together well, and is actually pretty darn good in sports, too. The lack of a title contending football team of late has had an outsized impact on the perception of the PAC.

I agree. I think its a situation that bothers non-Pacsters more than the people themselves.

West Coast fans still have nuanced view of things. In the south what your team makes in money is a personal pride issue that you tote around all week.

In the Pac the fans are more concerned with winning the conference and beating their rivals. In their view there is an inherent value in just being out there on the West Coast. Their view on college sports is insular and compartmentalized. They really don’t care what we do.

USC won a few what is now referred to as Mythical National Championships because it was pre-CFP and BCS. The last one was 2003 and then the BCS Orange Bowl, in 2004 under Pete Carroll, but was vacated for cheating with Reggie Bush.

So, blue bloods come and go. USC has name recognition but they haven’t been good since 2004.

As long as Memphis/SMU salt mines continue flowing for being left out of the P5 I’m good. It’d also be nice to travel to CO and AZ for away games.

You are correct sir. This is what two hours time zone difference makes. I am not from California or Texas but it is obvious outside of Texas that USC is a top premier school like UCLA is for basketball. We live in a time where what happened three weeks ago is swept under the rug or easily forgotten. The scoreboard never lies.
How many National championships does USC has over the utau pimp for example. Another example is how many basketball National championships has UCLA over Duke or many other schools combined.
Finally the NIL ruling is going to benefit Southern California schools greatly. Hellhollywood is not based in Ohio or Clemson the last time I checked.

Isn’t it awesome friends that we’re debating B12 vs PAC12…heck a couple of weeks ago we were looking at CUSA3.0 square in the eyes. I trust UH Leadership to do what’s best and if PAC12 is $60M vs B12 @ $25M that is a no brainer. Strictly football wise…B12 is better than PAC12 IMO and the numbers support that but take the flagships out and that changes the numbers. Go Coogs !

This guy didn’t do diddly the whole time UH was in the American. It was because of that crappy long term TV deal.

Are we all in agreement that realistically speaking, the Big 12 raiding the PAC is the equivalent to the talks of the AAC raiding the Big 12?

Value travels up…not down…and if the PAC comes a calling, every single Big 12 makes the move immediately just like the 3 AAC schools immediately made the jump to the Big 12.

Pac 12 has to grab the state of Texas 2 largest cities to get a bigger tv deal. So it just a matter of time.

Agree. They are have geographical cohesion, are like minded institutions, solid brands in Oregon, USC, UCLA.They do need few marquee matchups in the central time zone, which they are doing now anyway. The pac12 is not expanding and no the BIG is not going after USC.
