I think it mostly comes down to the last night time slot. The four schools may not be worth enough individually but might depending on demand for those games. B1G and Fox may be talking about that right now and that could decide it.
We’re could just be at an early step of “one step at a time”
What’s to discuss if B1G is “targeting” those four schools? They can’t pack their bags fast enough. So, is the call between Warren and Kliavkoff to make amends or notify them more schools will be poached?
Every PAC school is trying to get Warren’s attention. What’s to discuss (besides reduced shares)?
No. I’m suggesting it’s not hard to imagine them coordinating their expansion efforts to pick off the most valuable schools from the ACC to generate more income for all their members, and the least valuable ACC members would be relegated to the lower tier.
I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but it’s the only thing that would actually work.
Maybe now is the time for B1G to move. UO and UW both received bad news regarding payouts in the PAC…so it would make sense (at least to me) that the B1G could swoop them up (along with Tree and Bear) cheaper than if they had invited them a month ago. Plus, it will be cheaper to bring them in before they make a temporary stop at the Big12.
It’s so obvious what is supposed to happen. It should just go ahead and happen. Build up the B1G and Big12. Kill off the PAC. Wait for the same thing to happen to the ACC.
I think it is important to figure out their goals before guessing what schools they may or may not invite.
Is the B1G trying to maximize every potential dollar from a media contract? Is it important to go from 100M to 105M per school at any costs? If they are acting like a company trying to raise stock prices then yes.
They are already going to dominate all the other conferences financially (except SEC). Does a few extra million over 100 really change how they do business.
These are “non-profits” so no stock price. I think more that this is about setting up a P2 to breakaway. They are figuring what schools should be in the new college football system. One with its own rules they alone decide. A national league of what they consider the best teams (and markets). If this is the case, then it is not just a single schools viewership, but a new balanced league based on teams and locations.
That article says that, while any amount those schools would get would be bigger than in the PAC, they would likely have to accept a significantly SMALLER share than the rest of the B1G (including the LA schools), due to the fact that the four additions may decrease as opposed to add value.
The article then goes on to say that those four schools may be willing to take such a hit simply in order to ensure their own stability and survival.
If a media deal allows for x dollars per school, would a conference agree to a lesser amount per school, and then pay bonuses for ratings? essentially, a base/ plus system?
In the B1G, you know Ohio State is always going to get high ratings, so they would always be near the top earners.
However, maybe a school that has an up year, like Indiana a few years ago, gets a base plus, based on that year of great ratings? they had a good year, so they get something extra?
It might be a way to mitigate any hurt feelings over the Illinois, Vandy, etc. of the world.
Oregon has already stated they’d take a smaller share.
If this happens, this really leaves the Big 12 in a good spot to take the Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, & Colorado.
The SEC would take the top of the ACC, and we’ll have our share of ACC Schools we like.
Boom, the Power 3. While the SEC & Big 10 would be head and shoulders above us, we’d be a 3rd power football conference, the best basketball conference, and have a big say in playoff expansion.
Who else would come in to add value? They would have to take greatly reduced shares. Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal are all going to have to take significant reductions. It will be more than Pac money, but not by a lot.
End game may be 24. The 6 WC schools puts the BIG at 20. If Notre Dames comes in later the number would have to be 21 with three divisions of 7, or 24 with Notre Dame and 3 more
