I think Houston learns to adapt and maximize its roster pieces over time. For the rest of the league, I think you want to get Houston esrly, especially if playing on the road.

Actually, scoring, nor perimeter defense, is our issue…
Rebounding, post offense and post rotations in the monster have been our weak link… If I was able to choose between having J’Wan back this season or Cryer I’d take J’Wan…

Damn… I was watching that play… fast break with a 2 on 1… Baker jumpstopped and then fell down & lost the ball out of bounds…
Was distracted at first because they said the ball went off a Miami defender and I don’t think it did…
Then saw Baker holding his knee… tough break.

I think perimeter defense is an issue, a huge issue.
The biggest defining factor in Sampson’s post defense and monster scheme is that the point guard has to be a ball stopper (sampsons words froma few years ago). The entire monster falls apart if opposing point guards can just drive into the lane. The post traps are built once the ball is thrown inside, so the point of attack defense has to be strong. This year it has been really bad, like really bad.
On defense, Flemming is good in the sense that he has quick hands for steals and the athleticism to block shots. But as far as being a true ball stopper, he regularly gets blown by. Steals help in our system, but ball stopping matters more.
Second, no guard besides Sharp harasses on defense. This isn’t just a perimeter problem but a whole team problem with everyone except JoJo and Sharp. We trap in the sense that two defenders show up, but we aren’t trapping to actually make players uncomfortable like we used to. We aren’t forcing rushed decisions. When LJ, Sharp, Cryer, and the older bigs trapped you, they would bump you with their chests and really harass you.
