MM looks so smooth with the ball…he’s gonna be a baller

I’m trying really hard to temper my expectations a bit because they are insanely high right now. If that’s the type of production we’ll get out of Arceneaux, Miller and Walker in addition to our starters, I truly don’t know how teams are going to stop us. Very impressed by Uzan in a small sample size. He looked comfortable and wasn’t forcing things. Very good sign of things to come.

One rotation I’d like to see is LJ, Mercy, Sharp, Arceneaux, J’Wan. It’s a small lineup, but I think that’s the death lineup, at least offensively. Other teams are just going to have to hope we miss. If Tugler ever develops some touch in the paint…ok, I’m just getting greedy now.

I think making it a game of fouls will probably do it. Our FT shooting is still dreadful

lol
It will be similar to last season. When our guards are shooting it is really good and when our bigs shoot them not as good.
Mercy missed them in his first ever game so I think we can still wait and see with him.

Jojo’s form looks so much better. I’m hoping he can get his FT percentage up into the 60s, minimum.

Arceneaux looked like a man out there. The guy has really grown and bulked up. Actually the entire team looked like 30 year old dude’s playing. I am also trying to temper my excitement.

Hopeful on Roberts being better.
Javier went from disaster to serviceable last season. Hoping he and Jojo can make a jump in this area.

Oh yeah… that’s GREAT NEWS!

They know their role

Some observations I had from yesterday:

  1. Atmosphere was pretty incredible yesterday for an exhibition game that ā€œdidn’t countā€. Crazy to realize how far we have come as a program and fanbase. Was cool to see Tracy McGrady (and who I assume are his sons), Master P, and Astros broadcaster Todd Kalas at the game.
  2. A really funny moment after the play in the 2nd half where Tugler stole the ball from Wade Taylor, and started a 2-on-1 fast break with Wilson. Wilson kept the ball and got fouled on the layup attempt, and Tugler had a big putback dunk that didn’t count. Kellen pointed up at Kingston Flemings and Chris Cenac in the stands and yelled ā€œThrow the lob!!ā€. I think it’s only a matter of time before one or both of those guys commit.
  3. Tugler is going to overwhelm a lot of guys he plays against. His motor and physicality are scary.
  4. Milos seems like a very steady hand at the point, and his shooting stroke looks good.
  5. J’Wan is so crafty in the post. Very few guys that will be able to guard him one-on-one down there.
  6. Mercy might be the most polished freshman offensively we’ve had under Kelvin. He has a ways to go from a defensive effort and rebounding percentage, which will limit his minutes, but an exciting player for the future for sure. Shades of Marcus Sasser.

If MM can get settled in on defense, he could potentially contribute like Mills did as a freshman at some point this season. His pathway to PT is going to be tougher, but there will be times when Sampson is looking for more scoring from the bench.

our team looks deeeeeeep, hopefully the injury bug stays away this year

Sampson hinted in Sunday’ post game that MM’s minutes will be similar to what Shead had his freshman year. Just enough to get his feet wet. I could see MM coming in and providing an offensive spark. The minute he misses a defensive assignment, he will be pulled, just like Shead.

Yeah, I heard that. I also know that things can change and that Sampson really wants to manage expectations for these young guys. Most of all, he doesn’t want anyone asking him if they’re going to play more.

The thing is Wilson is the clear cut backup at PG and not sure we want to deviate by forcing Cryer on the ball.
TA is guaranteed to play.
That’s our two guard off the bench.
We could go another guard off the bench by going small with JoJo.

Yep. He adds another big-time shot blocker to the defense, can rebound and score a bit.

i dont see it as that clear cut…

Not sure he has more potential than Rob Williams. He averaged 25 ppg his sophomore season.

Prior to CKS I would have been happy to just have any legit D1 player at every starting spot.
