Meaningful = agree with you.

Do you have the $8M or not?

Waiting with bated breath.

UH campus area is needing a entertainment district around the campus imo for things to change. A place where folks hangout feel safe, before and after a game a district where 10 of thousands want to come and be part of the action, take metro or Uber in or provide or park their vehicles reasonably without forfeiting a days wages to do so. Bottom line sports is “entertainment” word meaning and etymology

ChatGPT
Meaning:
Today, entertainment means activities that provide amusement, enjoyment, or distraction—such as music, theater, sports, storytelling, games, etc.

Etymology (Word Origin):

  • From Old French: entretenir“to hold together, support, maintain, engage, keep someone occupied.”
  • From Latin: inter (“between”) + tenere (“to hold”).
So the root idea is “to hold between” or “to hold someone’s attention.”

Originally, to entertain did not mean “to amuse.”
It meant to maintain, to support, to keep someone in your company, even to treat or host a guest.

Semantic Shift:
Over time:

  1. Medieval period: “to maintain or keep someone engaged in conversation/relationship.”
  2. 16th–17th century: “to keep someone’s mind occupied or attentive.”
  3. 18th century onward: shifted to “to amuse or provide enjoyment.”

Key Insight:
The core meaning is attention-holding.
Entertainment is anything that holds the mind.

So:

  • Ancient meaning: to host, sustain, engage.
  • Modern meaning: to amuse or distract.

The essence never changed:
To entertain = to hold your mind in a certain state.

UH is not holding the minds of it’s alum or students or its city, pure and simple and that’s a failure on UH part and the powers that be responsible for that. Say what you want About Tom Herman he understood that and the city responded Coach Sampson understand this to.

Do you? Be for real

No, but I am not the one demanding that we pay CWF $8M a year. Where is that money going to come from?

This title needs an adjustment. We’re 8-2.

Currently, we’re already paying around $8 million for our head coaches…

In 2025, we’re paying:

Willie Fritz - $4.5 million
Dana Holgorsen - $4.5 million (minus 1.2 that Nebraska is paying)

Total: $7.8 million for coaching salaries this season (WF 4.5 + DH 3.3)

Dana’s payout will go down to 60% in 2026 which will be further reduced by his Nebraska salary. Plus, we’ll be getting a full big 12 share (jump from 18 million to 40 million).

Our revenues should go up with the new luxury seating that was built with the football facility:

  • new club section
  • new suites

Didnt he donate some money back with that extension or am I misremembering things.

Gave back $1M for the football ops building.

He donated to the football facility in 2023, don’t think he’ll be donating anytime soon

He was on the hot seat, similar to Gundy and Norvell giving back some of their salary.

Is there a chance there are coaches out there that have a more holistic view of things? I’m happy here and I make tons more that 98% of the population doing what I love. Close to family. Going in the right direction. I’m in my final stages of a great career.
Or is every coach a money grabber?
I’m torn on this question because we’ve been sated with a string of the former. But I hold out hope Willie might be different.

That’s why we pay an athletic director. It’s his job to raise the money to give CWF a raise, NOT MINE genius. I’m simply pointing out the obvious & here you come with these facetious comments that would only set this program back another 5 years. That’s the problem with this fanbase. Too many folks like you who are content with mediocrity. We finally find a good coach & you’re willing to let him walk bc you don’t think we should pay him a competitive salary commensurate with his production. Just ridiculous

Eh, a bigger problem is fans who demand perfection but refuse to contribute. It’s always someone else who should foot the bill.

Just look at our total Cougar Pride membership if you don’t believe me.

This has got to be snark.
You want to give $4M raise to a 64 year old man in his second season when have a declining season ticket base and low attendance? And I am the problem?

Please.

Would you clarify (or show some data) how we have a “declining season ticket base”?

2016 was our all time high in season ticket sales, think it was around 25,000. It’s been going down ever since Herman boned us.

Crap like this is why I barely get on this board anymore. It’s full of irrational crybabies who will whine about literally anything anyone says on these threads. We have a coach who’s won everywhere he’s been, and now he’s winning here. All I was saying was that there are a ton of high profile jobs available & if we want to continue winning, we have to pay the man or someone else will. It’s that simple.

You’re acting like he’s some scrub of a coach, like Dana, who doesn’t deserve a competitive salary compared to his peers in the industry. You want Championship level results, but refuse to do what it takes to get there. Ridiculous

Oh, so you know me personally now? Tell me then, how many tickets have I purchased over the years? How many times have I donated $$ to our collectives when I barely even had any to spare? How much merch have I purchased? How many games have I attended? How many UH games have I turned on multiple devices in order to help boost our viewership, even if it’s a small drop in the bucket compared to the majority of folks watching? Go ahead, you know me SO well

For my part, and maybe EastCoast is here too, the “industry” is ridiculous and those salaries are not based on performance or economic productivity, they’re based on being luxury positional goods. It’s not a matter of what someone is worth or whether this is financially sound or economically efficient, it’s a matter of showing off the iciest bling that nobody else can buy. I like it when my team wins but not when we (by analogy) blow up the historic bungalows in River Oaks and West U to replace them with McMansions just to show that we belong in the Memorial Villages clique.
