I also smelt something funny with the random Boise State and Vanderbilt schedule changes lsst season.
They really wanted CDH to lead us into the Big 12 and they fabricated last season’s schedule to justify not only keeping him but extending him.
The #1 thing that made me stop following the Texans is because of all of the times they either deceived or talked down to their fanbase…they really knew how to use the late Friday news dump to cover their incompetence.
You bring up an interesting question, but I believe the real elephant in the room is Pezman, and I really hadn’t thought about this until I recently heard Kris Gardner from Folks Talkin’ Sports mention something along this line…
Take a look at the teams past AD’s like Mack Rhoades & Hunter Yurachek, have been able to schedule Home & Away games with: OU, Louisville, TxTech, BYU, Vanderbilt, etc.
Now take a look at the teams Pezman has scheduled.
Look at the coaches Rhoades & Yurachek were able to hire along the way that helped raise the bar of their respective sports: Herman in Football, Sampson who is the most obvious success still doing it in Basketball…but there were also winning coaches in Swimming, Women’s Soccer (former Coach Diego Bocanegra led our team to their first winning season in 10 years, and led them to a Program Record 13-win season in 2021 before retiring), among others.
Tbf, the one great hire for Pezman so far has been Volleyball’s Coach Rehr. We’ll see how things pan out under Pezman’s tenure here. But being an AD isn’t just taking care of funding & building new facilities (that’s only part of it). The other part is evaluating Head Coaches & their team’s performances.
The thing that I still don’t understand is that the most profitable route is to hire a young up and coming coach that does so well…other schools pay US to take him while we elevated and grew our program.
Then you take that buyout money (that another school is GIVING you) and you reinvest it in your program while you rinse and repeat.
I 100% disagree with Tilman on this so i have no sympathy with him having to find buyout money for an underperforming coach.
He WANTED HIS strategy against what works well here.
Im all for getting the youngest most ambitious coach that wants to make us a prime example of why another school should take him.
Just stay one step ahead and track possible replacements. We profit under this strategy.
News flash- we have WORSE turnover with lifer approach with nothing to show for it. (I.e Levine, Applewhite & Holgs)
Tilman hasn’t done anything wrong. We all make mistakes. If you’ve ever hired anyone you’d realize you don’t always bat 1,000…even your friends will disappoint you at times.
I feel the same way……but he pushed this hire so please help us get out of it….get some of his fancy lawyers to find something in the contract that is at least good enough to push for a buyout.
Or take money earmarked for the football building, buy this clown out……New coach, New league, Better attendance……between conference money and higher revenue the money will be save again in no time….
One thing I’ve noticed is that once the BMDs start acting like they own the program – getting involved in the day-to-day, hiring the coaches, turning the AD into a very well-paid secretary – it almost never portends good things for the program. It’s how programs like UT turn into a revolving door of coaches that’s had one conference championship appearance in the last decade. The Fertitta Center naming rights should not come with the deed to the University.
Part of the reason his contributions are so public is because he has fewer collaborators/competitors than other schools. How many UT Boosters do you know by name? Joe Jamail, Red McCombs (back in the day) maybe, but there are dozens more.
This is one of the more ignorant and historically inaccurate statements
TF is the Chairman of the UH Board of Regents. His position dictates that he is involved in the decision making process. He is not just some cigar chomping booster billionaire putting his finger in everything. Even if he was, good for us because every major university needs rich boosters
As a bit of history… I don’t recall many posters here or fans in general griping that TF is just hiring his “drinking buddy”. There was a prevailing sense of excitement of CDH returning to UH and stealing a coach from a “P5” program.
So today, if CDH is burned out and eventually needs to move on, fine. But let’s not rewrite history and dump this on TF who has been a major reason for our growth in prestige and Big 12 invite.
Then you have selective memory because a large contingent thought the DH hire was cronyism and That the financial incentive to get him here was completely off the mark and put UH in financial peril.
My memory is not selective. There was a general sense that our little “G5” program scored a coup by grabbing a “P5” program coach. There was a sense of pride and optimism by many.
I remember the positive response to the introduction video with CDH and the “let’s go win some games”
Did some question the hire? I guess. But the prevailing sentiment was this was a good hire and reflected well on our potential.
TF’s involvement was already being criticized at that point, too. It was definitely a talking point at the time that the reason we even had Applewhite in the first place is that TF got his poor widdle fee fees hurt when Herman left and insisted on a large buyout that turned a bunch of candidates away.
