And again, on that point, as a government employee, I want as any freebie days off as I can get, so anytime the government designates another one, fine with me!

And OF COURSE we should have some sort of Emancipation celebration, so Juneteenth fits the bill perfectly!

I was of the patriotic camp that every president’s birthday should have been a holiday.

What about the Vice Presidents? Do you have no love for your country?

That’s a problem for your employer, if you need time off. Jewish holidays are never a day off, I always have to use PTO if I want to observe the holiday. I’m always able to observe the holidays I want to, it’s not prohibited just because Yom Kippor isn’t a federal holiday.

There are currently 11 federal holidays. Most companies do not observe them all. A google search says 6-8 is pretty average. The fact that they are federal holidays doesn’t force anyone to observe them. Employers (and employees) choose which to observe and which not to.

The reality is, most of the federal holidays we get is just a day off. While yes some people will attend parades, celebrations, or memorials for the holidays, most do not. Heck, Memorial Day is more about bbq’s, family get togethers, and sales on consumer goods than it is about doing anything to remember the sacrifices people gave for freedom. The majority of people observe these holidays not much differently than any other day off.

Really though if you eliminate all federal holidays, most likely we would all get 6-8 days less of holidays as employers wouldn’t give those days off to us or grant us additional PTO.

Good summary and new input on this.
It’s why his take is suspected it is due to
something else. And all the other rationalizing
doesn’t change or mask it. If we really want to take a hard look at it, Christmas as a federal holiday, is probably the oddity and could be challenged.

Interestingly there are state/local holidays that have some recognition federally too. Emancipation Day in D.C. celebrating the abolition of slavery is April 16. If it falls on a weekend, then the holiday is celebrated on the nearest weekday which pushes tax filing day to April 17 or 18 in some years. Then, Patriot’s Day in Massachusetts is in April which also can push the tax filing deadline specifically for residents of Massachusetts.

Per Google AI here’s some additional state holidays in Texas:

Texas recognizes several unique state-only holidays and “skeleton crew” days where state agencies may operate with limited staffing, primarily focusing on Texas history and heritage. Key state-specific holidays include Texas Independence Day (March 2), San Jacinto Day (April 21), Juneteenth (June 19, now also federal), LBJ Day (August 27), and Confederate Heroes’ Day (January 19). [1, 2, 3, 4]

Specific Texas State Holidays & Observances

  • Confederate Heroes’ Day (Jan 19): Honorspeople who served in the Confederacy.
  • Texas Independence Day (March 2): Commemorates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836.
  • Texas State Flag Day (March 2): Observed alongside independence day.
  • Sam Houston Day (March 2): Honors the first president of the Republic of Texas.
  • Cesar Chavez Day (March 31): Observed in certain areas.
  • San Jacinto Day (April 21): Commemorates the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution.
  • Emancipation Day/Juneteenth (June 19): Originating in Texas, this is now a federal holiday but remains a major state-recognized day.
  • Lyndon Baines Johnson Day (Aug 27): Honors the 36th U.S. President born in Texas.
  • Volunteers for Democracy Day (Jan 13 in 2026): Commemorative day.
  • International Holocaust Remembrance Day (Jan 27): Commemorative day. [1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7]

Texas State “Skeleton Crew” / Partial Staffing HolidaysOn these days, state offices are open but staffed with a skeleton crew:

  • Texas Independence Day (March 2)
  • San Jacinto Day (April 21)
  • Emancipation Day (June 19)
  • LBJ Day (August 27) [3, 4, 6]

Note: While some of these days are officially designated as state holidays, they do not always result in a full day off for state employees, as state agencies are required to maintain minimum staffing. [3, 8]

People can work on LBJ day if Juneteenth bothers them so much, since most Texan voters would not be a fan of him today. My dad certainly disliked him, but I suspect it wasn’t because of Vietnam, even though he was fighting age and serving between wars.

There is one.

We get it as a holiday in Washington County.

and that’s why i am advocating eliminating all holidays. most really do nothing for the actual day that is declared a holiday. heck christmas day, no one goes to church; people should actually have christmas eve as the holiday as thats when observances happen.
and i had actually been to MLK day parades, unfortunately i dont have photographic evidence to satisfy some; although i had been to the houston vet cemetary many more times.
unfortunately, we dont have choice. jews dont have choice, chinese amercans don’t have choice, the orthodox dont have choice and 3rdf generation veterans dont have choice; so i am for eliminating them all. that way you can use your personal time off, for what you want.

Nah f that. Pay me my holiday day off observed or not. That’s my day, you’re on your own for actual observances of the holiday go to church don’t go to church, veterans parade, whatever. You do you, try and take my day off?

Working Christmas Day and having Christmas Eve off is unbelievably out of touch. Not even Ebenezer Scrooge himself.

It’s weird. Of all of the holidays I’ve had over the years, I have never been forced to celebrate anything on those days off.

If you don’t know how to manage your personal time off, maybe work on that instead of telling everyone else how to live.

lol don’t have a choice? none of these people are allowed to celebrate what’s important to them?

The only reason to segregate MLK Jr Day and Juneteenth as sectarian instead of collective quintessentially American holidays that is inclusive of all is because you consciously choose to draw that divide. And it’s obvious why…

Are you aware that the Civil Rights Act requires employers to allow time off for religious holidays, absent an “undue hardship” on the business? This is another choice you have in addition to choosing how to spend your time off for a federal holiday.

Your beef here is clearly not about “choice.”

You’re joking that we don’t have a choice?! Didn’t think I forgot about what happened last Juneteenth. You said I was cool and could come to the cookout. I even kept the raisins out of the potato salad
