Move the damn camera to the other side will solved to the empty grey seats problem. Dont care how much it cost. Keep the band where they’re at and give the students access to bottom 15 rows behind both tbaskets. Leave section 120 for recruits, friends and families.
We have to figure out how to get the students and fans more involved during timeouts. Make this an event for the fans instead of just 40 minutes of basketball. More hype music and fans on videoboards during timeouts. We need to see Cougars Dolls/cheerleaders out on the court hyping up the fans during timeouts instead of performing their dance routines. Only a few watch them anyway. And do all the contests at halftime. Crank up the hype music. I don’t give a crap if few old farts complain it’s too loud. Allen Fieldhouse didn’t get to 125 decibels without cranking up the music. Fans were loud but the music was even louder.
It’s worth a shot on the concession prices when you consider that part of what makes people late is that they’re trying to get something to eat before they go to the game.
Lowering those pregame prices will more than pay for itself, both short and long-term.
I think some of the issues are the results of the program being invisible for almost 30 years. Especially the student cheers and student involvement. Over time those things tend to get better. How many years has Kansas and Duke had to build on this. Moving the students and band definitely needs to happen though.
At the K State game I really noticed our during timeout presentations need to be changed. Especially if the crowd is going crazy, keep the music pumping and let the students go crazy. We have too much scripted stuff now. It was probably necessary in the beginning to get the fans interested.
Also penalize the students that claimed the tickets and not using them. If you go to UH Parents Facebook, there’s a lot of complaints from parents that said their kids could never get ticket to football or basketball game.
AND there is nothing right near the stadium to eat/pregame. It sucks, wish something would go in the parking garage retail spaces.
On the schedule it says we are having a “Block Party on Cullen” prior to the Texas game, which is at noon. Something similar for weekday games might be worth trying, maybe a couple food trucks, tents, beer vendors… Could use the AAC or set something up along Cullen.
I’m just going to keep renewing my season tickets and ascend to CP platinum giving levels. Let you fine folks keep solving our (non) problems with basketball.
Man I miss the Big Bamboo! Got to chat with Dierker several times there. You could also get beers in there after they cut off sales in the stadium after the stretch.
All this talk about the student section when as of today, there are still student tickets left for tomorrow’s game.
900 tickets and we can’t get them all claimed. So Lauren is out there on social media having a scavenger hunt on campus giving away FREE Nike team gear to try and drive up interest.
The location of the student section is not currently an issue. Apathy is.
Not sure I understand what that means. Are you saying that we should spend $$$$ and move existing (paying) fans to new seats? Would the additional students attending games, maybe, and a possible better look on TV be worth the lost revenue and disruption?
Kind of, but when people propose taking existing season ticket seats and designating them as student tickets, then they’re interrelated. At this point, the students haven’t demonstrated the demand for more tickets, so making additional accommodations for them shouldn’t be prioritized.
To throw the students a bone while some poop on them. Students have only had three real games this season, starting with Texas Tech, when school was in session. Did people see a difference from students in those games compared to the previous ones? If so, relax.
Two antidotes on this. 1. Back in the day, I was able to attend a game at Phog Allen only because school was out and I was able to get a KU student ticket. UH isn’t the only school that opens up student tickets over breaks. 2. When Nebraska beat #6 Wisconsin last week, many Huskers said it was the best ever environment ever at Pinnacle Bank Arena. A lot better than when they beat #1 Purdue a few weeks earlier. Why? A major reason is school wasn’t in session during the Purdue game so there were a lot fewer students. Available tickets were sold to non-students.
Finally, when it comes to time out entertainment, it is a legit issue. I know this from firsthand from often frustrating experiences when I wanted to do something else but was unable because the game should have dictated it. UH is tied to many promotions they have to do with IMG/Learfield. Could the marketing team do better…probably. Looking back, I know I could have. But many times, their hands are tied by the contract with IMG/Learfield. Can’t piss off the sponsors. Schools like Kansas and tu also have IMG/Learfield or similar, but the schools can be pickier on what is in the contract since they have more fans, both at games and listening on radio so that relatively minuscule timeout promotion doesn’t mean as much in the overall contract and those schools contract parameters may be different.
The lack of generational students has caught up with us and it shows by the lack of interest for sports.
The only thing that can turn this around is to hope that we can attract more traditional students who want to be Cougars and later want their kids to follow in their footsteps.
