I was there in that era, too… And I remember football games being AWESOME!!!
What disappointed me was that we voted for TDECU Stadium and we still have attendance problems a decade later.
Then you have Levine and Holgorsen from the Sumlin tree who didn’t live up to expectations other than the 2021 football season.
78% of UT students live off campus. Undergraduate students gravitate towards West Campus more than any other neighborhood, while graduate students often prefer the quieter North Campus and Hyde Park neighborhoods.
UT is a commuter school!
And a real Freshman Orientation to teach hand sign ,songs ,history etc.
They do.
Shame Cub Camp got cancelled!
Sure, but with less of a number…and immportntly, much different adjacent and nearby (walkable) campus friendly culture.
And, that on-campus student body percentage hasnt always been even that low that for them. I.e…while UH had 2% living in campus for decades, UT never had that low of a number. They have a big head start in building generational passion. Its real.
That is a huge difference.
Why did you even choose to go to UH? Sounds like you should have gone to UT.
Becuse I preferred UH. I don’t like UT and all.
But I can be honest about the differences in fan base and how widespread the passion is.
I just recognize that there is no easy, quick or free way to catch up. Surely not with the ideas I’m seeing as solutions. Wish it wasnt that way, but it is.
I think we need to go to the extreme like A&M does and do a cougar cub camp brainwash weekend in order to build our student enthusiasm.
I actually thought the students showed up big last night. Heck most of them were even in their seats early.
My dream is to see UH as a destination place and that one day their kids will be carrying on the tradition.
We have not had that loyalty here.
If it doesn’t improve by 2030, then it won’t happen.
Higher enrollment numbers does not guarantee more people show up for basketball and football.
Look at UCLA, Cal, Pitt, Miami, Georgia Tech, etc which are schools located in large metropolitan areas.
Perception has changed dramatically and will continue to do so. The school I knew just 15 years ago is not close to what we have now and the experiences our current students get to share.
Did you not know that before you chose UH? How does that affect your degree?
News flash: President Lincoln was assassinated.
On a serious note, I saw some amazing UH basketball games at the Summit or Compaq Center, or whatever they were calling it in those days, when the SWC Tournament was held their.
I think we just need to get the students organized. Places like KU the students know exactly how to acts and have been doing for years , so whenever need students join they just follow along.
Honestly we need to get the students there a couple hours before the game stars and teach them chants, to always yell on defense, etc. after a while hopefully becomes organic and we don’t need to that anymore.
Like a group that leads cheers. What a great idea!
Yes, I knew it.
I suspect you are thinking that I’m complaining about any of this. I’m not at all. Its fine with me.
I just chimed in to contribute to explain why I think folks should accept that it’s unlikely to change anytime soon (and maybe to stop complaining about it…OR… be the first to have a solution…because…imo, nobody has any quick and affordable way to fix the apathy issue).
I think you are placing me in the wrong box. I love UH just fine even the way it is (accepting that apathy for most current and former students is the reality). And I have no regrets with my choice to this day…happy! I lived 100 yrds away from the least prosperous portion of the 3rd ward…loved it…hooped in the surrounding neighborhoods daily. Loved it. My degrees from UH have served me very well.
Reconsider that maybe you have me labeled backwards (the cause of your defensive replies)?
I know I’m beating a dead horse but to get more students involvement, we have to move the students down lower and behind the baskets. The 300 students standing behind the courtside seats are great but that’s only 300 out of 900. The students behind sitting the band just don’t care enough to get involved or cheer loud. Get them down in front rows behind each baskets, have cameras constantly pointing at them, put them on big screens and play hype music so they can jump up and down during every timeouts. Screwed the whataburger and cruiseship completions. No one care. Or do that during halftime to satisfy the sponsors. We can’t ask the student to get involved when they’re hidden in the corner of the arena and behind the band. We also need to switch the camera to face the students. Until those changes are made, things will be the same with the students involvement.
The funniest thing about the student section complaints is that I brought up the court and camera thing years ago and I got absolutely dragged for it, the fact that it has a near unanimous swath of support now is awesome.
