Doesn’t really make a difference. The defense could hold Memphis and UCF each to their lowest scoring games of the season and the pitch forks will still be in full force.
For me, I said at the start of the season 9-4 with a division title is the minimum I need to not put Applewhite on the hotseat. He is 1 win away from that.
12 team playoff. Every conference champion plus 2 wild cards. Top 4 get a week 1 buy. That only adds 1 week to the season and rewards earned championships.
That adds 1 week to my 8 team playoff. It adds 2 weeks to the current playoff system and in seasons with an independent doing well, it means only 1 P5 gets a second team in. No way they approve 2 extra weeks when the P5 only goes from 4 teams to 7 teams max.
Here is the deal with 8 or 16 team playoff: They will still find a way to keep G5 out of it.Then we would be ranked no higher than 17th in the poll…CFP…football was ruined with the creation of the CFP!
without including all the conference champions it remains a fraud. It does not matter if it is 2,4,8,16, or 32 teams if half of the teams playing D1 are excluded just because of conference affiliation.
The way I see UH fans talk about teams like Rice, UNT, etc, I have no doubt, that a vast majority of UH fans would be against all G5 conference champions having equal access if we moved to a P5 conference.
There is a middle ground by going back to a BCS type system for an 8 team playoff. If you want to grandstand that a 7-6 G5 champ that played 4 bottom 10 teams OOC deserves priority over a 12-1 P5 runner up that beat 4 top 25 teams OOC, you won’t be taken seriously by the majority of fans.
There is a better chance of the P5 and G5 becoming two separate entities with separate playoffs. Unless that is what you want, you gotta take into account that the SEC and Sun Belt are not equal.
College football as it is currently constituted is broken. Vandy receives more tier 1 money per year than the entire AAC and they have a better chance of having a two loss team make the current playoff system than and undefeated AAC team. All conference champions must be allowed in the playoffs not because they will win it this year but because they have a chance to play in the playoffs there will be a redistribution of talent and in 10 years one of the G5 teams may win it all.
A random note: UCF looks like a very fun school. Certainly seemed like they were just at a big party the whole time. I really hope all of the publicity these last two years doesn’t lead them to get poached away by a P5 conference.
P.S. - With Friday’s game being on ABC, I believe this is the most UH has been on network television in one season. Certainly during my tenure as a Coog fan. (I’m not sure what coverage was like during the SWC days)
I call BS because your plan excludes Big Sky, Big South, etc. Why does the Sun Belt champ deserve access but the Big Sky champ does not? They are both NCAA football teams. The only difference is that the Weber State Wildcats don’t have a swimming and diving team. Why should that affect the football team?
Also, all FBS conferences have a chance on the 8 team BCS plan I brought up, so your no access thing isn’t an argument against my plan.
Your arguments are all straw dogs. Big Sky, Big South etc are not FBS. They are FCS and play for their own national championship now. The 8 team plan only allows for 1 team from the 5 G5 conferences combined and allows for 7 teams from the P5. That is not equitable.
The divide between “Major” division football and the rest was codified in the 70s when they created 1-A and 1-AA. It’s all D1 in every other sport. It’s relevant because it could happen again soon, splitting p5 from g5 for football.
“FCS doesn’t need inclusion because they have a playoff already.”
FCS teams are DivI teams just like FBS. They are all Div I schools and all participate in the same basketball tournament.
You make a call for equal access and then want a system that still denies access to half of Div I teams.
Just calling someone’s argument a straw dog doesn’t make it true. It’s something many bring up when it’s their argument that is too weak to stand on it’s own merits.
Can we go with any team that offers 85 scholarships should have a chance to play for the national title?
Just like every team that offers 65 scholarships has a chance to play for a national title…at least they all get a chance to no matter the difference in the conferences strength.
