Rice is a hard no going forward. The Coogs and every other Big12 team will have to improve their OOC scheduling or have no shot for an at-large CFP bid.
It would be politically and financially stupid to continue to play Rice. given the changes coming to college football.
In the two games, the Coogs radio crew is consistently talking about the WRs not getting separation from the DBs. Thatās on them. So far, that unit has been a weakness, but weāve managed to get enough out of them to contribute to the first two wins.
Seems the OL played better, but still not where they need to be.
Still, I think itās clear the offense improved from game 1 to game 2. If we can continue to improve each week, with the defense being stout, I think weāll be ok.
That said, it sure would be nice to get some āoffenseā out of the kick return game to pick up a little slack and help us with field position.
When you grind teams down with physical football, eventually you bust big plays.
Any of those chunk scores could have been sustained drives had we not turned them into big plays.
Thoughts on U of H vs. Rice
The overall feel of the game was rough. Both teams struggled with footing on the turf. The turf is really bad, and players were slipping all night.
One big issue is how easy it is to read our offense. The offensive tackles gives away our tendencies if the tackles come out high in his stance, itās a pass; if theyāre down, itās a run. Kids at Rice are too smart not to pick up on that, and a defensive coordinator Jon Kay is even smarter. Iām sure he had his guys keyed in on it.
Offensively, we arenāt very good at wide receiver right now, and we lack explosiveness in the backfield. Riceās secondary was strong, especially #7 at corner he stood out.
Defensively, we played well, though Riceās offense made it easier. They ran the ball almost every first down, and their quarterback couldnāt throw the ball across the street. Once we committed to stopping the run, we were in good shape.
Still, itās early. Thereās a lot of season left, and plenty of time to get better.
I got a kick out of that. But, the sightlines in that old stadium are awesome. I really donāt care if i go back. Many memories there. It was funny, kids playing football on the concourse like we did when we were young. It was fun watching warm ups in the end zone as well.
At Rice Stadium, UH vs Rice was the last ever SWC game played. Rice Stadium was also the game preceding Andre Ware winning the Heisman Trophy. The U.S. President gave his āwhy we go to the moonā speech at Rice Stadium. The 1974 Super Bowl was held at Rice Stadium. The Houston Oilers played there.
Is it old? Yes. Does it need an update? Yes. But donāt be bad-mouthing a piece of Houston sports history.
