As recruiting rebounds, Army to expand basic training, rebuild for war (msn.com)
At 78, this topic is so like 60 years ago! Yaahnn.
Registering for The Draft was just another day in the life in the 1960ās.
Registering for the selective service/draft is no big deal.
Drafting kids into war is a problem because you then need overwhelming support for such as WW2 . After Vietnam, they decided to end the draft because of political protests and that military leaders donāt want to deal with people drafted vs a volunteer army like we have now. The negative affect of a volunteer army , like now, is we can go to endless wars with no political backlash which is also why we have engaged in several wars costing millions/ trillions and no backlash. Iād say if we had a draft , we might have less wars bc politicians would have to justify them and deal with protests. Therefore unless itās WW3 , I donāt believe we will nor can ever have a draft here again. Also kids today are too soft unless they sign up willingly as natural born fighters. You also have skepticism in that life is tough enough and the government doesnāt have your back like in Bruce Springsteenās song ,ā Born in the USAā, where you fight for your country then come home and no one hireās you. The bond has been broken. In the 40s or 50s, america was great in that you could raise a family on one income etc but now itās tough with 2 people working to make it. So a draft wonāt work here in these times unless absolutely necessary and the wars we recently fought and now have to be done with volunteers only.
I think if we had a draft for the Iran war, youād have protests and kids would opt for jail time or take the Muhammad Ali approach.
In Iran , we probably should simply air strike them every few yrs if they donāt comply on nuclear talks.
Main point is a draft wonāt work bc the bonds have been broken of the gov and society really caring for soldiers who make that sacrifice unless itās WW3.
Military leaders donāt want a draft because of the issues I mentioned. A volunteer army allows the military etc to do what they want and when they want with no political costs.
We had a guy on here years ago who tried to claim that his registering for the draft in 1980, was somehow proof of his willingness to serve.
NOT!!!
He never served, of course.
He also tried to claim that a draft was more likely then in 1980 when we were at peace than after 9/11 when we were actually at war.
Laughable. Yet for years he continued to believe that, even when other posters tried to tell him how STUPID that was.
In reality, there was no chance of a draft either then or now.
Having to register for selective service, whether automatically or voluntarily, does NOT mean or indicate that a draft is coming or is likely, much less indicate any real or genuine willingness to serve. For that matter, automatic registration for selective service hardly suggests that a draft is about to be implemented.
Anyone thinking so needs to seriously get a clue.
Congress would have to vote to authorize any draft, and any party pushing for that would be committing political SUICIDE.
I remember the Kerry campaign tried to lie and tell voters that a draft was coming under Bush.
A few on the old board were even stupid enough to believe and parrot that nonsense. Even worse, there appear to be some people here that are still stupid enough to believe the same nonsense.
Your take on this is 100 percent correct .
There wonāt be any draft unless itās WW3.
There is a reason they stopped it around 1973 after Vietnam bc of the reasons I mentioned.
Yeah, so?
Big whoop.
If you think that that means that a draft is imminent, then Iāve got some ocean front property in Arizona Iād like to sell you.
This is a nothing burger.
Knowing this administration it probably has something to do with illegal immigration.
I agree. I saw an article suggesting that and I actually wrote to the author and editor saying they need to change it. It also said this was a T mandate and completely omitted that Congress put this in to law.
I agree that we have zero chance of a Draft.
Indeed, voluntary enlistments are very high right now.
I was at UH during the 1960ās and was in Army ROTC. Truth is The Draft was a motivator. I remember my Father saying āOne way or another you have to serve so it would be better serving as an Officerā.
We do not need a Draft.
Lots of countries have mandatory military service⦠to think that it will NEVER be used again in the USA is a bit presumptuous imoā¦
I didnāt see anyone make the claim that it would never be used again. Just that it isnāt currently needed.
This country is too divided for a draft. Only a real, and I mean real threat from a nation attacking us directly is the only chance the country doesnāt riot in the streets if a draft is re-instated.
It depends on whose side is in office at the time of course, but you have to sell war to the American public, which is not happening right now.
Only complaint Iād have is it should include women. Seems like a very
dated implementation with only young males required.
Not sure that qualifies as a lie.
No one said it would NEVER be used again.
But it is NOT likely anytime soon, nor is this registration thing any sort of indication that it is.
If WW3 breaks out, then sure.
Iāll worry about any draft if and when that happens.
What are the odds of that? MINISCULE!
Sure it did.
Anyone with even HALF a brain knew that GWB wasnāt going to implement a draft, knowing full well that doing so would constitute POLITICAL SUICIDE.
There was NO BASIS for Kerry saying that.
Baseless lie.
Unless you possessed the ability to read his mind back then, you canāt call it a lie.
You, as a prosecutor , need to use language more precisely.
A proper response, about the only thing you can say , is āduring the campaign,
he alleged his opponent would implement a draftā
See the difference. Take your L and move on.
