Their jobs are to discuss sports and therefore should know more than the typical fan who keeps up with it.
No, their jobs are to get people to listen. Look how much money guys like Skip Bayless and Colin Cowherd and and Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith make. Hot takes drive listenership/viewership, even (especially) when the host clearly doesn’t know what they’re talking about. It’s where the “News Talk” radio guys who yell into a mic about culture war nonsense got it from.

That’s TV - but even then those guys started off taking calls when they were on the radio - not hide behind the mic and block fans out
When the Texans started that nonsense of insulating the coach by taking away the coaches and players by producing their own show that helped cause the downfall
Any producer or station manager who has done homework in Houston surely knows what made people listen in the past was access and engagement
Just to think as a kid you had head coaches and players go to the radio station and take calls and do live TV studio shows AFTER games
Every guy you pointed out is on the national scene with very different audiences.
As long as the local shows are set up how they are the design is for them to discuss local sports. No need to complicate this very simplistic issue.

I had a sports personality one time tell me that if you are a sports media personality, you’d best have two sources of income because jobs in the media come and go so quickly. That goes for print, radio, TV and online. If one gig ends, at least you’ve got another to pay the bills.
Lots of talented sports writers and broadcasters out there looking for work.

I believe it. On the surface, it seems like a pretty easy job just talking sports for a few hours a day. However, there’s likely a lot of pressure and they can be easily replaced.
So be the best at what you do. Some it is pretty obvious they make no attempt to do so.
My biggest pet peeve is when host don’t do their homework….
I used to be a staunch defender of Matt Thomas……but that guy is checked out.
I know he is doing Rockets play by play and I think he is spread to thin….his wannabe UT cohost is horrible which doesn’t help.
The worst thing about his show is that sports is about 3rd on the list for what is discussed….most of the time it’s lame shticks that are not funny……but boy do they think they are….

I used to like Matt but haven’t listened to him in a few years. During Rockets season, I don’t know how he juggles it all. He’s the PA announcer and also does play-by-play for road games.

Matt hasn’t done PA for Rockets in several yrs. He’s the Radio play by play announcer for all Rockets gms – H/A .

My mistake. He did it from 2016-21. He also did it for the mid-90s glory years.

Some never diversified themselves to transition into other areas of sports also - everyone can talk Texans but can everyone talk high school or college if they had to - nope

I’m still mad about how they dismissed Keenums potential to be a nfl quarterback. It was just awful. Grudge

Stan Norfleet said Keenum was just a clipboard guy….NO WAY he would play instead of Mills much less win….He dogged UH fans all week….then after Keenum WON, they guy disappeared for like two weeks rather than face up.

Ughh. It’s just so unbelievable. His whole career was just affected by it. When he finally got a decent line at Minnesota instead of building on it they bought in Cousins who was great but couldn’t go as far as Case brought them because they were broke. Then to Denver where he played behind a holding machine #72. He had Diggs and Theilan who caught everything. Im screaming!

I agree on Matt Thomas show. Just a bunch of silly schticks with Ross giggling for 3 hours. If someone calls with a serious question, they won’t know the answer and branch off into nonsense. The show is much better with Dan Matthews filling in for Ross. He has some knowledge.
Speaking of nonsense, Salisbury show is 90 percent nonsense.

Sports Talk Radio in Houston is always going to be about pro sports. Killer B’s are good IMO. If you want to hear UH talk find Kris Gardner on his various platforms.
Again, that’s why I have largely stopped listening.
