Did you know Houston once had a mountain called Mt Houston? I read it in the Houston Chronicle once about Houston’s mountain. There were people that even took pictures of themselves standing on top of its snow-capped peak and people sending post cards to family members in other cities with scenes from Mt Houston!
It was also one of the most unique mountains in America since it was the only mountain from east Texas to the eastern gulf coast regions, such as Florida and even southern Georgia! Unfortunately, those short-sighted dimwits back in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s thought it was a great idea to level the mountain and use the soil to build roads and construction projects! Effectively destroying Houston’s only natural wonder and tourist attraction!
That was the first place I ever encountered a “Ladies” sign on the inside of the men’s bathroom door. Stopped me dead in my tracks for about 5 seconds. Have seen it in other bars / restaurants since, but the first place it gets you is always memorable.
I had heard about Lubbock before in not so glowing terms. I had the opportunity to drive through that fine city a month ago for the first time… yuck… double yuck.
The Chron said that Mountain Rd in Houston was the road that led to the mountain and that road still exists today. No, this isn’t BS! Houston once had a mountain and I saw a black and white picture of a young lady standing with her boyfriend on top of the mountain that she sent to her out-of-town family.
Thanks for the link, my man! The article that I read from the Chron was a lengthy one from about 10-12 years ago. It had a couple of pictures of people posing for pictures on top of Mt Houston. I have tried to look for that article but I can’t find it no matter how hard I tried! I guess since the Chron has put a paywall on all of its archives that makes it hard to look for its articles.
I’ve worked on projects all over the US and one thing I have found in large supply is disdain for Texans and Texas. The folks in Alaska were particularly against Texans because of the hordes that went up and worked on the pipeline and North Slope. I spent June. '83 thru Sept '84 and March to October '86 on the slope.
The one thing they all like is the money Texans spend.
I spent a loooong week in Lubbock years ago. I remember that when I drove out of the airport, there was a huge freeway (like 4 or 5 lanes going each way) like they were expecting this population boom that never happened. It was 5:15 and maybe 12 cars on the road.
