Khator and Tilman

Well my experience has been first hand with her and her husband at games. I’ll go with that over anything you’ve heard otherwise

I’ve met Renu personally ON THE ROAD at UH pre-game pep rallies. She’s very much a UH sports fan.

I REJECT any contention to the contrary, given that.

But The Carnegie Foundation has made statements time and again that those CLASSIFICATIONS are:

  1. Not rankings

  2. Infer nothing about academic quality

  3. Infer nothing about the quality of the research conducted

  4. Are not to be used as a ranking

  5. They specifically changed their nomenclature away from Roman Numerals so that university administrations would stop using terms like “tier 1”

  6. They are not to be used as a basis of claiming one university is of a higher quality in education or research

In addition in at least one press release talking about “tier 1” UH used the “Only three other universities in Texas” comment and that is directly from the NRUF legislation and that was specifically discussing AAU members not Carnegie Classifications

It is made very clear here

http://web.archive.org/web/20120429100222/http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/resources/faqs.php

The Carnegie Foundation does not rank colleges and universities. Our classifications identify meaningful similarities and differences among institutions, but they do not imply quality differences.

The Research I & II and Doctoral I & II categories of doctorate-granting institutions last appeared in the 1994 edition. The use of Roman numerals was discontinued to avoid the inference that the categories signify quality differences. The traditional classification framework was updated in 2005 and since identified as the Basic Classification. Many of the category definitions and labels changed with this revision.

Classification is different from ranking, and the Carnegie Foundation does not rank institutions. Teaching quality is very important, and it is at the heart of many Carnegie Foundation programs, but it is not something that can be reliably assessed at a distance on the basis of available quantitative measures such as faculty salaries or instructional expenditures. Apart from the question of appropriate measures, it is not clear that teaching quality is best assessed at the institutional level, rather than at the department or classroom level.

In addition to the above the Carnegie Classifications have been revised so many times since that “ranking” (not a ranking) that they are not even the same as when that classification was first made and many of the universities that falsely used those classifications as a ranking or to infer higher quality of education or research now find themselves right back wallowing with as many of not more of the universities they were trying to distance from…and now those universities have the “rankings” (not rankings) to support their claims

That is one of the issues with misusing things and using things as they were not intended

We built a medical school.
We rebuilt a law school.

She rebuilt the Athletic facilities.

We went decades with failed leaders.

I am not in the business of complimenting leadership. I get paid to do the opposite.

She is certainly not perfect but she has done well.

TCU Built a medical school and athletics facilities

UT RGV built a medical school

SHSU built a DO school

these are things that universities do

Nevertheless, that’s where the designation comes from, as well as the claim to be Tier 1 (which is NOT illegitimate, that is indeed the HIGHEST TIER for research according to the Carnegie Classifications), and it was indeed reached on Renu’s watch.

Don’t argue that point. It’s a fact.

UH reached it before Tech, in fact, though Tech subsequently attained that designation as well.

Recently, the standards to reach R1 were lowered, so it now looks like several more school in Texas may soon reach the threshold, NOT because they are anywhere close to UH in research, but simply because it’s an easier designation to attain.

As for their categories, they continue to exist. The most recent list was published in 2021.

UH is still an R1 school, the HIGHEST TIER (i.e., Tier One) for RESEARCH.

You can even look up institutions by name.

Look up UH if you don’t believe me.

Here, I’ll save you the trouble.

It says “Doctoral Universities: VERY HIGH research activity.” That’s the highest tier. Below that are “Doctoral Universities: HIGH research activity,” and “Doctoral Universities: Doctoral/Professional Universities.”

Now then…may I ask which school you are a graduate of? You always seem to be running down UH. I seriously wonder if you are an alum, or even a real fan.

As a graduate of THREE DIFFERENT R1 schools (two of which are AAU), I feel the need to scrutinize you a bit more.

Now then, Renu’s OTHER TWO goals are: 1) AAU, and 2) Top 50 public universities by US News.

#1 may take some more time, and in particular, more biomedical research.

But we are getting closer on #2. The last US News rankings had UH at #70 for public universities, so that one is perhaps within reach.

Khator has 1 more goal AAU then she might leave . She’s not the type to stop until goals are reached

My take

I’m not sure there is really a way to hold Renu or Fertitta accountable. Pez could posssibbbllly be the fall guy…possibbllly. Frankly, he needs the boot along with CDH and his coaches. Renu needs to then keep Fertitta out of the hiring process - he doesn’t know what he is doing in this space - the evidence is there on that.

It should be more than self-apparent by this time - NO internal promotions to HC and NO buddy/retread hires. UH has always run through our offense when successful. Go get a top G5 HC or blue blood P5 OC that can coach and recruit and wants to grind. This shouldn’t be hard.

I am certainly not her agent but we were pretty rotten before she showed up.

Our administration was a national laughing stock and for at least 20 years we had one failed administration after another.

I am not giving her a trophy. I have called her out on CoogFans more than anyone just about but I am an honest referee.

Are you saying she hates sports?

I don’t think you can reasonably say that.

Could she be putting greater importance to other areas of a university besides sports, probably so. Actually, most like yes.

But to insinuate that she’s anti-sports and potentially holding us back, then I think you’re either wanting new leadership (understandable) or you’re masking a grudge or grievance by saying “oh it’s not me, it’s other people and groups in the know who want her out”.

Look, the reason I’m not taking what you’re saying too serious is that I knew people within the engineering dept and tech dept who didn’t like her the FIRST year she was there and still didn’t like her even 5 years later.

It just comes off as “my boss sucks” type of grumbling.

She doesn’t love the sports, but she understands that they have a huge role in the recognition of UH and for the students to feel like they are part of something

UH will never be Harvard. Of Houston, of Texas, of the South, or anywhere. Ever. Just enjoy what the school can be. Would suggest we set our sights on UCLA, if anything.

Harvard is a dream of generations. Parents start their kids at preschool for this. Prep for their entire lives. UH? Not so much.

C’mon, I can’t believe that anyone thinks that UH can or should become anything even remotely similar to Harvard. To suggest that is absurd!

I thought Renu’s aim was to make UH into a Berkeley or Georgia Tech, prestige public school universities in a major city.

Edit: I don’t know man, some of what’s being said on here by Renu detractors is odd. I’ve never heard UH have any aspirations to be a “Harvard of the south”.

Maybe not Berkeley.

Not urban enough.

Nor Georgia Tech with its excessive STEM orientation.

But UCLA, or Pitt would be good role models.

AAU!!!

Harvard on the Bayou…of course it’s all said with tongue in cheek…let me hip you to “Person” he’s been ragging on UH since he’s been posting on the board. He’s a t-sip I believe who’s see UH as arch enemy number 1 and threat to Bevo for some oddball reason. Look at his past post in no way this guy or gal is a Coog
