Damn, everybody’s handing out awards now.
We need to establish the Charles Jones Player of the Week award.

I nominate JoJo Tugler for the inaugural award, with his 4 pts and 5 fouls…

That last sentence!

And you guys need to remember something I keep saying : NBA drafts on potential. I always reference Peyton Watson’s one year at UCLA. Last night, Watson went off for 32-12 next to Joker.
NBA scouts know that Kingston hasn’t even tapped into his full potential yet. At this point, he’ll be a top-10 pick, based on that above article.
Nate
The first sentence of Kingston’s section was a nice one too!
“Along with Duke, Houston is viewed as the most talented team in college basketball.”
I thought last year’s team lacked the alpha who wanted the ball at the end of the game and could drive, shoot & make foul shots. I hoped TA would materialize into that player but, alas, never happened.
Flemings serms like he could become the alpha at the end
At the end of a close game we cannot have Sharp dribbling the Ball.
He is a Catch-and-Shoot guy.
Enter Flemings.
I honestly think we have three freshmen, given time, who can be that guy…
all time favorite GIF…excellent choice
100%
I think by midway through conference it will be the freshman’s’ team and Sharp and Milos will complementary players….there will be games where one of the seniors saves the day no doubt.
But the young fellas on this team are gonna drive the train.
Atleast that’s my take.
If the Auburn game is any indication, Fleming is already our true point guard. But like you said, Uzan and Sharp can all win games for us down the stretch…
Agree on Arceneaux. Immensely talented, but never took over a game.
Before your time, but Rob Willams was a national PG recruit out of Milby HS. He scored 16.3 ppg as a true frosh, shooting over 51% from the field. Had there been a 3-point line, it would have been 20 ppg. Averaged 4.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals. I believe he was the first frosh to ever start at PG for Guy V.
He came in with 6-9 Larry Micheaux out of Worthing. Along with Greg Kite, they were the 3 top recruits in the city that year.
The next year, they were joined by 6-7 Clyde Drexler from Sterling and 6-6 Michael Young from Yates. Young was a national recruit as well. They were the first forwards to ever start as freshmen for Guy V.
Williams led that bunch, scoring 25 ppg as a Soph and 21 ppg as a junior. Those would have been 30 and 25 with a 3-point line.
One time, Williams made the best play I’ve ever seen. He goes full out after a loose ball going out of bounds at half court, hurdling over press row. In mid air, he whipped the ball behind his back toward the rim, hitting a sprinting Benny Anders at the peak of his jump for a monstrous slam dunk. A behind the back alley oop for the ages.
Kingston Flemings is damn good. But he’s got a long way to go before he can be called the best freshman PG to ever tie up the laces for for UH.
I will never forget Rob’s behind the back full court pass in Austin his freshman year when we beat TU…The Texas crowd were in absolute awe of Rob. He was a flashy, magician like guard who could shoot and had eyes behind his head.
Flemings will never be as flashy, but I love his coolness. Even though he made a couple of mistakes down the stretch Kingston seemed to be in total control of our offense.
He is also a great penetrator and can really shoot within the arc. What I like most about Flemings is he seems to play within his limits and certainly shows leadership on the court even as a freshman. And if he keeps improving, especially his three point shooting, our freshman could easily be drafted in the first round this year…perhaps higher than Rob was after his junior year.
But let us wait and see how this all works out…
Yup. Can’t speak on Rob. Was talking more during Sampson’s tenure.
Rob Williams was an amazing player, but let’s just say that defense was not his forte. I’m not sure Williams and Coach Sampson would have meshed.
I went to several practices and Guy V laughed about Robs lack of defense. When Rob decided to go pro after his junior year, I heard Guy was happy to see him go after what happened in the Final Four game loss to North Carolina.
However, Rob was the best guard probably ever to come out of Houston at the time, and we had to recruit him because everyone on earth wanted him and our program was sinking fast. And of course him signing with the Coogs opened the door for guys like Clyde, Michael Young, Micheaux, etc…
Rob was definitely the best offensive PG I’ve seen at UH. Rob’s older cousin, Ken “Juice” Williams, also from Milby HS, was on some of those teams. Juice could jack them up from anywhere.
What a great shooting duo that was!
How did Kingston do?
Was his “shooting” okay?
Did he make any threes?
And if so, were they “deep enough”?
Just checking because I heard shooting was a big issue for him.
