I became a life member in the nineties . I worked with my Company’s charitable foundation to get numerous grants for the College of Engineering. One consisted of $35,000 each year for five years. The College said thank you. You don’t even get a thank you for a Life Membership of $1000.
I think the Alumni Org should benchmark with other major universities to establish a better system for creating and keeping Alumni.
I know there has been a lot of talk in multiple threads about gouging the fan base with parking costs, ticket costs, concession costs etc.
Life membership has been $1,000 since forever. Maybe it is time to increase the price and add the perks back to being a lifetime member.
How many here remember the bus trip to LSU set up by UHAA the first time Helton played them in Baton Rouge in the 90’s?
It was set-up so bad you could have made a comedy movie from it.
Say what?!?!?!
I’ve been a life member since 1992 and I never knew I got free anything !!
I finally ponied up and became a Life Member last month.
I didn’t do it for the tailgating, I did it to help pay back the Alumni Fund Scholarship I got that helped me attend UH back in the day. I think I got $1,000 a year, which was huge in the early 90s.
I’m finally at a point in my life where I can start to give back in a meaningful way, and it’s important to me that I do so.
I didn’t sign up for the tailgating. My wife and I did it several years ago and I don’t even know if tailgating was part do the deal.
My issue with the decision isn’t about the perks. It’s about creating a tailgating culture. The tailgate used to be pretty well attended and those kinds of things help turn the game into an event. Doing away with it is penny wise and pound foolish.
This is exactly the place we should be investing. It doesn’t cost that much relatively speaking either.
Let’s not benchmark against Texas A&M. It’s $1,000/yr just to get event invites. $25K for lifetime membership. Anything less than $1,000/year is an alumni magazine subscription and a different color (donation tier level) annual tag for your membership plaque.
Please, more details lol.
You know, I was considering buying a UHAA Life Membership, now after reading this thread… I am having second thoughts…
It’s my understanding though, that with Black Friday coming up, you could see a discount on the price.
Last few years UHAA has been giving out about $300,000 in scholarships
and grants.
Not too bad based on revenue; but I don’t have another for comparison.
There is a $750 special that’s run from time to time. That’s what I paid.
Also, I don’t expect them to feed me at tailgates for life, especially for adult
beverages and food. But a free coke or bottle of water would be nice ![]()
Can we all agree that if we as an Alumni base complain about giving $1000 to the school that we got our degree from, then there is no way our football team can ever be ranked in the top 10. Since success comes from us donating money, especially the rich guys in here. Trying to stay hopefully that we as alumni start giving more money to the school many of you always complain about. Money changes programs! Maybe they should have a $10,000 membership.
We were told we would go to Baton Rouge, tailgate, attend the game, then stay at a hotel/casino on the way back.
The ride on the bus was fine.
The food at our tailgate in Baton Rouge was nothing but bags of trail mix and soft drinks.
The tickets wern’t organized right, so family members were separated. LSU fan pack their stadium and it wasn’t like Robertson where you could just move to another seat to be close to someone after kickoff. LSU fans didn’t offer to give up their seats so UH fans could sit together.
The game was actually exciting, we should have won, but blew it in the 4th.
After the game, the hotel/casino ended-up literally being a truckstop/motel. The “casino” was nothing but slot machines and electronic poker.
It’s just one trip I will never forget.
That was my recent experience as well. I thought since I never got a
thank you, I may have contributed to some scam site by mistake ! I reached out to
Lifemembership coordinator to confirm it was received, which it was. She said it
should have generated a thank you. If they can’t autogenerate a thank you, what
other emails from them will I be missing out on.
I became a life member many years ago.
Haven’t really done many events with that group though.
Life Member for over 11 years. Its been a big disappointment (just like a lot of UH Alumni/Administration issues).
It is not at all what was promised, yet they continue to try and get me to give them more money. Yeah, no thanks. I think I gave you enough. ![]()
I’ve been a life member for about 40 years or so. I have only gone to the Life Member pregame tailgate or at the AAC get together a couple of times. I really have no reason to attend, it’s pretty blah to me.
I know they can’t provide free food and drinks and I don’t expect anything for free so the charges didn’t bother me, it just holds no attraction for me.
Now that Coogfans has ads and you can pay for a membership can we start up the Coogfans tailgate again so when they stop doing it or god forbid charge for it we can all complain?
Amen! Mud and pre-game heat made tailgate on Cullen a negative experience with just as many complaints as new set-up, though it was more convenient.
Already did this when closing Cullen started. The complaints from Life Members (even more than this thread) about heat and mud when it rained is why it was moved indoors.
