My concern is that it appears to take 3+ years for a QB to ever see the field under CDH. If that remains to be the case, then it seems questionable that UH will be able to recruit & develop any upper level HS QB talent in this new transfer portal era.
It seems that Kevin Sumlin was a better HS QB recruiter than CDH and Sumlin wasn’t too good at it.
It’s a different time than when previous coaches were here. Players are less likely to stay around and work their way up the depth chart than in the past. Freshmen are almost never ready for the job, despite what they think.
You see the same thing happening at D1 schools everywhere. It’s becoming almost impossible to “develop” players who stick around.
Nah it appears Dana is going to play the QB who is the most ready. Idk why people continue to question his knowledge of the position, how many times does he have to prove himself? He will play the guy who’s the best option
After seeing Tune’s development, I am not going to worry about it. Dana will figure it out.
When you compare our season versus West Virginia’s season, three years after Dana left, you realize Dana won in West Virginia and in Houston. One place is much worse after he left and one place is much better after he joined.
Okay fellas…check yourselves. I rarely, and I mean rarely call out folks on this Board, or in life in general. And Law, you should know better.
When you lump a group together and label them as “____”, then you put yourself into a category of folks who are regularly called out.
Same with Privates. Sure, the level of competition isn’t like playing Allen week in and week out. But there are always diamonds in the rough. So when you lump all Privates, you are being myopic at best…
Now to my point. We are very much in the mix recruiting Kinkaid WR Dillon Bell, who is a Georgia commit. Yeah, I guess Georgia only wants Pigmies and Gimps…I know we are better than this, so stop.
Oh, and by the way…using this same logic, as a very recent Mid Major, Georgia surely looks at us as the JV as well…
Check yourselves.
And best of luck to Maddox and the Kopp family. They are wonderful folks, and will be missed by the Cougar Family.
He enrolled in the spring of this year, and now he’s entering the portal to basically go and sit behind someone else? If he would have completed a full year, or two, and then went into the portal I would understand. He wasn’t going to compete for the starter job - that was Tune’s and he knew it when he signed.
Also interesting that you would transfer when you have a real shot at getting a ring and potentially being with the team for a NY6 bowl.
Thinking that Holgersen is not convinced any of our backups are ready for the spotlight just yet. I am thinking if Tune is not coming back we will see a new quarterback via the portal or JC route.
But like everything else in this thread everyone is just throwing darts in the dark via opinions. Me included. Good luck to you Mr Kopp!
You either want to succeed or not no matter the adversity or the obstacles in front of you.
Everybody told Case he would never play in the NFL. How long has he been playing?
Good luck to Maddox
Case Keenum got reps as a true freshman. Kopp did not. No comparison.
Art Briles and Kevin Sumlin both were willing to play 1st or 2nd year QB’s.
Dana Holgorsen seems to want to play only 3rd or 4th year QB’s. Don’t know how that will fare in this current transfer portal environment. However, if it doesn’t change, then someone among Massoud or Holman or LaFebre will QB UH’s debut into the Big 12.
I of course wish Maddox the best like everyone here. This does put us in an interesting spot where tune still has one year left. And the only real quarterback prospect on the roster is Massoud. Not saying it can’t be him, but I personally don’t think he is the future. Obviously that is up to the coaches to decide though. Outside of him however our options are limited. If you look at the quarterbacks in the transfer portal most of the top qbs only have one or two years of eligibility left. Exception being maybe Myles Brennan who I think has three. But would he really want to waste one of those years sitting at UH I doubt it. And every QB we have offered in the 2022 class has already committed elsewhere. Problem with getting a transfer portal QB next year is that he still has to learn the system in a short amount of time. A name I would keep an eye on is Cardell Williams. Committed to Tulsa currently, but he is a Westfield kid who is raw, but has a TON of potential. My guess is he didnt like the crowded qb room and chose tulsa, but maybe with Kopp gone he would reconsider
Keenum arrived on campus in 2006, and he sat out that year, got better, and eventually became a starter during 2007, after a several games as a back-up.
You’re right that there was no comparison. Keenum was willing to work for it, and he performed when he got the chance. He didn’t quit because someone was in front of him.
No coach wants to play freshmen QBs - it only happens out of necessity. When the other guys on the team are better, there’s no reason to stick the freshmen in the game.
