Finally saw Sinners. Got it in before the Oscars.
It actually lived up to the hype. So much stands out, the cinematography is amazing. Characters and dialogue is cool.
If you love music history you will marvel at what they pull off.
There is a love and care for telling and showing this story. In different hands it could have turned hokey and campy.
If you don’t know anything about the story, i would say that’s the best way to take it in, just know its a great ride. Oscar nominations deserved

Sinners is the popular choice for best picture, but the better movie is Hamnet.

I have seen every best picture nominated film this year.
Hamnet has better emotional depth, the acting in Hamnet and direction is much better. Jessie Buckley’s performance as Agnes is highlighted for its emotional impact and intelligence. The acting in Hamnet is described as powerful, natural, and deeply moving.
Sinners, is visually bold, with great energy and pace. It is a main stream movie, based on its box office impact. Hamnet has more artistic drama.
Both great films just on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I have only see Sinners and One Battle after Another. I liked Sinners better.
So is Bugunio bad?
Just streamed Hamnet a few days ago on Peacock.
Pretty good.
Relies on some questionable history (there’s only one reference to Shakespeare’s wife being named “Agnes,” in all other documents found mentioning her by name, she is always “Anne.”).
Nice outdoor scenes and great acting.
Interesting how they almost gave her naturalist/borderline witch vibes.
I wonder if Chris’s son (Val Kilmer’s character) will be in the story…

Hamnet was okay….not great IMO.
One Battle After Another would be my pick.
The individual performances were amazing.
Sean Penn was next level.
I just don’t know that a vampire film deserves to win over what I saw in Hamnet.
That film was flat out amazing.
And I like Sinners quite a bit.

Hamnet was devastating, in the most amazing way.

I found the whole movie slow and repetitive, and yes, I didn’t particularly care for the ending.
OK, so Sinners won a lot of Oscars.
I heard that it is streaming on HBO Max. I’ll have to check it out.
Hamnet had a best actress Oscar. I streamed it on Peacock recently. As I said, pretty good. Not fantastic, but pretty good.
I thought that the actress that won the Oscar did a great job.
The main thing that I didn’t like about it was the historical “reaching” (there’s only one document ever found that calls Shakespeare’s wife “Agnes,” and it wasn’t from Shakespeare himself; he always called her “Anne.”).
Also, I don’t think that there’s any proof that she was an inconsistent clairvoyant, or a borderline witch that dabbled in mugwort therapy.
You do know it’s a movie, that is classified as “historical fiction” it was not pretending to be a documentary.
Having her portrayed as a healer was a creative choice making her loss more profound as mother.
