But this dude I know who reads articles while crapping says it’s the opposite.
(Ironically posted while reading and crapping)
While me getting a car with a solid state battery may be years away, a phone with one next year would be seriously cool. Days of battery life?!?! Yes, please.

Every week, these strange white crates leave a high-security Tesla compound in Lathrop, California.
They’re showing up near the Hoover Dam. At an Air Force base in Georgia. In the heart of New York City…
An estimated 4,000 of them are now spread across 48 locations in 14 states. And more roll out every week.
But you won’t see this on CNBC, and you won’t read about it in the Wall Street Journal.
Because these mystery Elon crates have nothing to do with electric vehicles, space, social media, crypto, biotech, robots, or AI…
The “mystery Elon crates” are Tesla Megapacks — grid-scale battery storage units being deployed across the country for utility, military, and commercial energy projects. Tesla is quietly building the backbone of America’s grid-storage infrastructure while everyone’s distracted by culture-war bullshit — but it is the actual story worth paying attention to.
No secret technology. No hidden invention. Just the most boring, most profitable, and arguably most important thing Tesla does — hidden in plain sight.
I haven’t seen your recent specific story on wsj but I have seen wsj articles on that subject.

Yeah, we really need to source stuff when it’s pulled from somewhere.
I recall Elon being quoted about this 6-9 months ago about the shift in Tesla to newer solar panels and the deployment of grid battery storage has been on going.
I follow ercot kind of closely, and this year
they. have gone from 16,000MW to 20,704 MW in battery storage. It’s kind of happening all over; California has hefty grid battery setup as well.
Batteries make solar and wind expansion more possible.
Here is article I was thinking about…from
July 2025.
Also it has been reported Ford and GM have been shifting their battery factories to do the large grid “crates” thing as well.
Expansion into solar and energy storage
Beyond automobiles, Tesla is also making moves into the solar energy and battery storage domains.
Since acquiring SolarCity in 2016 for $2.6bn, Tesla has developed, manufactured and installed photovoltaic solar systems alongside its EV production.
The company’s objective has been to foster a sustainable energy ecosystem, directly influencing innovations in manufacturing energy solutions.
A notable contract in 2024 saw Intersect In Power securing a 15.3 GWh storage agreement with Tesla.
Mike Snyder, VP, Energy and Charging at Tesla, said: “Intersect continues to be an exceptional partner and their development expertise combined with the plug-and-play nature of Tesla’s vertically integrated technology enables the speed and scale needed to enhance grid resilience and support greater renewables integration.”

That would be cool , but wow the costs of those things compared to li ion is eye popping. Costs will come down as mass produced , but per article it’s like 5x the old tech batteries now.
Is Elon not being covered enough?
I’m sure this is being covered plenty, but grievance sells clicks.
Now if only Texas would do something about the Zombiewells.
It’s a global business after all and profits are highly dependent on economies of scale. Can’t hit high volume you stand to lose billions.
I posted a Ron Baron interview years ago about why the existing automakers are dead in the water. To retrofit factories for EVs is so expensive, it will drag them down. Volkswagen is drowning in Germany just like Ford & GM.
There’s a reason Charlie Munger bet heavily in BYD and not any US automakers.
Interesting, range anxiety is no longer the big deterrence for US drivers in choosing whether or not to buy an EV. It’s price. This is a quite a big movement in mindset IMHO and bodes very well for their adoption long term.
Their prices are only high here because how early we are in their development & adoption by US auto makers and because of tariffs. Still, they are 6.5% of new car sales. That’s up from a few years ago, with the increase leveling off last year but beginning to rise again recently.
But if the price drops, and range anxiety isn’t addressed through improvements, will range anxiety be the thing that holds back further adoption?
