Yeah, but while this ain’t the Big 12, it ain’t exactly the SWAC either.
If he wins any conference title, the odds of him being fired are small.
It’s not an impossibility, but it’s probably not likely.

Not true at all.
That’s not how this works….the team has not made the tournament in five years if they miss this year.
They are playing a horrible schedule multiple years in a row where an at-large is not even possible.
Relationships with HS and showcase team coaches have eroded over the last several years.
The message to a new coach would be if you can’t get your sh-t together in five years we are looking somewhere else….Nobody is turning down a Big-12 job in fertile recruiting grounds because the last guy was fired after five years of not being productive.
He’ll the Bucks just fired a coach that just won a TITLE and had the best record in the league this year….he coached poorly in the first round this year, lost and is gone.
Not even close to true law……your opinion is flawed. You’re basing it on a single season…
He had a winning season last year too.
If he does EVEN BETTER this year by finishing first……it’ll be tough to justify firing him.
Message: improve to a first place finish….YOU’RE FIRED!!!
Bad message.
Florida St fired their HC last year after a regional appearance and a final RPI of 33. I guess it all depends on the expections of the AD.
Maybe so.
Sorry you are absolutely wrong……if you want to double down go for it……your lack of baseball knowledge is showing law.
I was trying to be nice in my response but you have no clue what you are talking about.
A winning season? It’s not even worth explaining to you……you know the law, if you told me my thinking was flawed because I was not considering this or that……I would take your word for it……or at the least try and inform myself to make a rational decision….
Baseball is something that I know more than you do…… a lot more.
Several people on this board know much more than you……but by all means, keep posting from a place of ignorance.
It’s not about who knows more. No need to get personal.
The reality is that it’s tough to fire a coach that finishes first, in ANY sport, and it’s even tougher to fire a coach that improves to first.
Look at NCAA D1 BB as if it was pro ball, MLB & MiLB combined. Would a winning record be impressive if most of the wins came against single A and rookie league teams?
It’s not getting personal….it’s facts.
I won’t say anything else because you refuse to even consider that you’re wrong……which you are X10.
So carry on thinking you’re right.
If it happens, he’ll be barely finishing first on one of the worst baseball conferences in the country this year. This team would struggle to stay out of last place in the B12. There’s also no energy around the program, and his recruiting prospects are astonishingly poor, especially compared to out other sports.
There’s way more to it than falling into first place. I don’t think he’ll be fired, but I don’t think should be the head coach just because he’s won marginally more games against terrible competition than the other scrubs behind us.
Make a run into the CWS and the discussion changes.
But the admin could fire him today and it would have zero negative impact on the next hire. The program’s trajectory is obviously not where it should be, and that’s the only reason needed to justify a change. All coaches understand the deal.
Hey listen, I’m willing to consider it.
If you’ll go back and check above, I said it was POSSIBLE.
I just don’t think it’s likely.
Coaches that improve to first usually don’t get fired……in ANY sport.
We are moving to a new and better league. It’s a pretty unique situation, tbh.
They do when their SOS is a freakin’ joke….that winning record you talked about last year was empty……did you know there were at least 25-30 teams in front of them that did not make the tournament? You can win 50 damn games but if you’re playing sisters of the poor and blind it means Jack.
This year the SOS is even worse……if you want to scan back up I have a post that explains a lot……if you don’t that’s fine too….but you keep saying in ANY sport without considering anything other than the team record……that’s not how this works.
True. That winning record resulted in a final RPI of 78. We’re at 94 now so have we improved or has our conference just gotten weaker? (Rhetorical question)
And you’re absolutely correct. I read this whole discussion… The “I know more about baseball than you” guy is pretty spot on if this situation were happening in a vacuum or even during a normal season.
What he’s failing to look at is the big picture. When Todd Whitting leaves UH it will be by resignation, retirement or assignment to another position. Key baseball donors (although there’s not many and they’re not the ones you’re thinking of) back him. He has support from the Chancellor. The rest of E Cullen does not care enough about baseball to pressure Pez to do anything and Pez is not going to fire a fellow alum if he finishes with a winning record.
Most importantly, we are going to the Big 12 next year and this is not a priority (at least right away). There are 392 other things we need and we have no money - even if baseball arguments are valid, Pez would look like an absolute moron explaining to the chancellor how to spin firing a 400 win coach with 2 straight winning seasons to BOR.
So yeah, the baseball argument checks out. I’m a baseball guy too. But it’s absolutely irrelevant here. If you want Coach Whitting fired while hems above .500, then donate to Dana’s ops building and basketball’s new upgrades and donate a lot.
In a vacuum? Nah, it’s the other way around……my vacuum is 5 years of non-sense.
Two straight winning seasons? This proves you know just as little about baseball……for a “baseball guy” you don’t know much if you think these are real winning seasons.
The program has dropped to a level that has not been seen in years.
If they win the conference tournament I could see Pez justifying keeping him….but then next year will be one for the ages.
You underestimate the situation entirely.
If the AD can only focus on one sport at a time then he should be gone as well.
There are a lot of things I could post but it would just fall on deaf ears between the two of you….also, something that will stay off the board regarding the situation.
Carry on with your non sense.
True, we have beaten the entire SWAC.
Because it is our non-conference schedule.
There is very little to consider in the way of money, outside of donors. His contract ends after the season.
Maybe, but if he wins the tourney and gets to the NCAAs, then there’s hardly any chance he’ll be fired.
And even if he doesn’t do that, BUT, he finishes first in the regular season, then the probability that he’ll be fired won’t be high.
As I said, when coaches take a team that didn’t finish in first, and improve them so that they finish in first, they generally don’t get fired.
It is what it is.
