I don’t think he is back unless we win AAC Tournament and made Regionals. The OOC schedule combined with the AAC not being very good has made it almost impossible to get an at large bid. If he can’t make the regionals now he has no chance when the competition gets tougher next year in the BIg 12
We haven’t made a Super Regional since 2014
We haven’t hosted a Regional since 2017
We haven’t played in a Regional since 2018.
Whitting is going to need to do more than make a Regional (we definitely won’t be hosting one with our weak schedule) before discussions of keeping him as HC are even considered.
The only path to a regional this year with the weak schedule is to win the conference tournament. Period. End of story. 11-5 and sole possession of first in the AAC standings is indeed very nice. But as I’ve previously said, it’s just that: nice.
I think most people on this board believes it is time for a new head coach! The way the season has been going, it gives our athletic dept. a chance to bring him back! I don’t think that is the best in for the future of our program!
I think Randy is spot on. Pez’s MO seems to be to do anything to justify not making changes (to not spend money) on any sport not football or men’s basketball.
Everyone knows it’s long past time for a change. But, we’ve seen that Pez doesn’t want to. He’s approving these garbage schedules just hoping there’s enough success to spin into preserving the status quo. And the attitudes expressed by some of the people on this board prove that methodology can be successful…even if it is detrimental to the program in the long term.
As I’ve said before, Whitting should have been replaced after the 2021 season. Retaining a coach who leads the team to a 19-34 record and more importantly, a 230-something RPI sends a bad message to the fans.
The fact that we have a minimal number of players from the greater Houston area says enough about whether we should keep him or not. Houston is one of the hotbeds in the nation for high school baseball talent, and we do not come close to getting our share of them. His contract is up at the end of the season. We do not even have to fire him.
That would have made more sense. That was a truly GHASTLY season. The worst I can remember for this program.
But this season we are likely to finish in first which makes it a lot harder.
Win the regular season title and we are then the #1 seed in the tourney, and thus have a good chance of winning it.
Win that and we are in the NCAAs, which is the goal every year.
If that happens, then there’s a strong chance that his contract will be renewed.
Sounds like Holgorsen method lol, have a great season around contract extension time get renewed and then crap the pot thereafter
Winning the regular season title would be great, but it doesn’t matter whether we finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. There’s not enough difference in the bottom five for it to matter who we play in the first game. What we have going for us is we’re the only team that has won every series to date. It could come down to us against ECU in the final again, and who plays best on that day.
The goal should be to be worthy of an at-large bid, that’s the sign of a good team. Getting the auto-bid should be plan B. Relying on the 1-bid conference method doesn’t impress me at all.
If Whitting’s contract is renewed, unless he immediately pulls another Frank Anderson out of his hat, I’m afraid we’ll have that many more years of relying on the 1-bid conference method.
And it’s not like we have a commanding lead in the standings. The argument would be different if we were dominating the conference.
Will the game time be postponed to 2 or 3 today?
Currently saying 2 because of lightening.
2:30 now
Cancelled
That was true before Todd hired Ross Kivett. Since then UH has done much better getting some excellent Houston area kids to sign.
The 2023 signed recruits include:
Tristan Russell SS, Cy Woods HS. (PG Rating 9) A 9 rating by Perfect Game means they regard the player as a Potential top 10 round pick and/or highest level college prospect
Connor Bennett C, Oak Ridge HS (PG Rating 9)
Anthony Avalos SS, Pearland HS (PG Rating 8.5) 8.5 means PG regards the plays as a Potential draft pick and/or excellent college prospect
Alan Lopez 2B, Tomball HS (PG Rating 8) Four-year varsity starter for Tomball.
Diego Luzardo RHP/1B/OF, La Porte HS (PG Rating 9)
They’ve also signed Galena Park’s Nehomar Ochoa Acosta, a very impressive physical specimen but is not rated by PG.
You can google all these guys to learn more about them. Better yet, pull up their videos on YouTube. And these are just the local guys. They’ve also signed some talented guys from other parts of the state (Ace Reese, Riley Pechacek, Cole Carbone).
Now I"m sure this isn’t going to change minds about Todd around here. But an objective observer should agree that local recruiting has improved significantly with the Kivett hiring.
We’ve won every single conference series so far. Tough crowd.

Yep, it’s a tough crowd, and rightly so. We would probably be just above the middle of the pack in the CUSA and Sun Belt this year. That’s obviously not where we need to be.
You got to keep it short and to the point. Nobody is going to read all that.
