Exact, they actually need the pac12 , for the west coast. No other conference gives them that penetration. That’s a large population and I would think espn would maintain some kind of presence out there.
Now . They could possibly settle on a 12 school pac12 that provides content for espn+ , similar to the AAC. I doubt kliakov settles for that. He would be more inclined to go central.
ESPN does not need the big12. It has the territory and inventory covered by the SEC.
Correct. Its FOX who needs western and southwest penetration. To me, it’s no secret why FOX has come out and said they will not be bidding on PAC media rights, where ESPN has control/ownership. Also makes more sense now why FOX sports CEO would come out and publicly congratulate Brett Yormark and say that they look forward to furthering their relationship as a premier partner with the BIG12. They are waiting for the PAC 6 to come on over to BIG12 so that they can partner with BIG12. This could also be the reason FOX’s valuation of Oregon/Washington move to BIG not being pushed by FOX… Move those assets over to BIG12 and make more out of that product. At which point, FOX would have their two chess pieces… BIG and the BIG 12 + PAC 6. ESPN would have their two chess pieces in SEC and ACC. Essentially, both networks would each own half of college football’s new P4. Both networks would eventually share ownership of the expanded playoff… Which is what FOX wanted all along.
The dregs?? Arizona and Colorado are certainly the dregs, but Utah won the conference last year and went to the Rose Bowl!! And Ariz State had a decent middle of the pack team. i think they won 7.
We just need 2 to come and the others will follow. Doesn’t matter which 2. Majority of P12 schools don’t want to be associated with MWC schools. It’s in their DNA.
Totally. If we get the Arizona schools, I believe others will follow. (Not at all convinced we get the Arizona schools, though. I think we may need to sell both of them and ASU seems reluctant. Spitballing, of course.
While I still think average team value is not necessarily the best way of going about it, I believe Arizona and Arizona State’s value is right with the conference’s. I’d be surprised if it moved the line much one way or the other.
Dodd said that the corner schools overall are right in the ballpark:
Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah bring an annual average value (AAV) that at least matches the 12 members of the Big 12 set to remain with the league once Texas and Oklahoma leave in 2025.
If I had to guess, I’d guess that Utah’s is highest, Colorado’s lowest, and the Arizona schools in the middle.
Everyone does realize that if the Big XII stands pat because the PAC stayed together, nothing bad happens to us. We will play in a conference in which any move to the PAC or ACC would be lateral.
If Oregon/Stanford/Washington get a golden ticket some year, then look at the remaining schools once more.
A lot depends on TV negotiations, which could go a number of ways.
One possible scenario is that ESPN gets what it needs from the Pac-12 and so when we get to the negotiating table they’re not desperate for content and are able to lowball us. We need ESPN bidding on us to get a good deal from Fox/CBS/NBC/Turner/Amazon, just as we need the rest bidding on us to get a good deal from ESPN.
Whoever the Pac-12 signs with won’t need us as much as they would if there were no Pac-12 to sign.
This is not completely invalid IMO. However, I think there are those rare times when you makes some moves for nothing other than strategic reasons. I think this is one of them.
If the 30 days timeline is accurate, the PAC has 30 days to try to make a play for a B12 defection. This will serve them better than invite someone from MWC.
ESPN will whisper in the PAC ear which B12 team increases their value and by how much. I hope it isn’t enough to flip any on our side.
The OU/UW question still outstanding adds risk to that equation, but the news I’m seeing is that B1G is going to hold for now. There isn’t a financial reason to include them… yet.
The Big 12 had like three rounds before they got it right, and that was with the most bullheaded program gone. The most bullheaded Pac-12 program is still there!
