Anyone who expected this to be like Tom Herman’s first year doesn’t live in reality.
Sumlin and Herman had some good players. Holgorsen ruined the team and look how long it has taken WVU to rebuild after he left there.

Preparation.
Competitiveness.
Improvement.
That’s pretty much it for me. If we had those things, this season could be a success even without a winning record.
Saturday’s game looked a lot like the first game of the season. Our best game of the season was a game where the coaches didn’t have a full week of preparation. That seems weird unless you look at the obvious answer.
Pretending this season wasn’t going to look pretty much like it has is delusional.
We knew we had a bad OL coming into the season.
We knew we didn’t have a Big12 WR room
We knew we had a ton of new pieces coming in…and many were not highly sought after.
We knew we didn’t spend NIL like many others did to procure talent.
We knew we lost on quite a few that we wanted but got outbid.
Yet many pretend as if this was not the case and start their releasing their psuedo-pensive thoughts of “wow, I didn’t think it was going to be like this…”
I had hopes the OL wouldn’t be as bad as it is but hopes do not equal reality.
I didn’t expect to look uncompetitive in 4 out of our 7 games, that’s for sure.
There is way too much “hope” going on. There were people who thought we could survive those departures. It was solely based on hope.
Hope is not a strategy.
I thought we would probably have trouble moving to a run based system and that we didn’t have an out like past years because our WR room was slowish.
I actually thought we moved the ball pretty well Saturday when we weren’t throwing the ball to the blue jerseys.
Dude has won EVERY stop he’s made…crappy coaches don’t do that.
You build on a strong foundation…it’s going to take some time. There is no short cut
A world in which a $4.5m salary comes with a gap year or three is why my interest in college football is dying.
A world in which people don’t understand what it takes to turn a program around is the world that exists on Coogfans and the Coog FB groups.
Listening to Fritz’s presser this morning and it sounds like he will need to revamp a lot of aspects of the team. I think we will see a reshuffling of coaching staff in offseason.
I don’t think we can tell anything until we resolve our Jekyl and Hyde QB situation. Every game there are issues with either QB1 or QB2 or both. Time to give QB3 a legit shot at running the offense. He’s looked composed, comfortable, and confident in his limited time … give 'em more real game reps!
Go Coogs!
You don’t pay $4.5m without expectations.
Mine were very low. Basically just wanted to see more discipline and kids that looked interested in winning. Thassit.
I’ve seen that in one game.
Teams like Utah Tech, Utah State, Sam Houston, Miami of Ohio, Army, Tulane, Fresno State, Towson, North Dakota, and Arkansas State have played better against our opponents than we have. Sorry, the rebuild is not tougher here than at FCS schools.
You don’t pay $4.5m (which you did not) and have unrealistic expectations (pretty sure Renu and Tillman knew what they were getting and what we had).
I don’t know if you know this but FCS schools primarily play other FCS schools on a more even playing field. There are $ and then there are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
One thing Willie has shown is that he can turn a program into a winner and he’s done that multiple times.
The bigger issue with that take is that it isn’t true. It never has been and never will be.
Every AD who fires a head coach says it’s because of the “body of work.” No AD has ever said “We gave coach his freebie suck season and it never got any better.” That’s just not real.
Ask the coach at Bama if he’s getting a freebie. If you don’t like be compared to Bama, fine. Ask the Southern Miss coach who was fired after one year. Or maybe you can ask Major Applewhite.
The fact is everyone on this board and everyone on Cullen should know Holgy got fired for not “doing his job” RK said as much. Having to bring in 60+ kids for year one tells you Holgy left a dumpster fire… But the fact is nobody making millions of dollars to do a job gets a “freebie” anything.
Go Coogs
Snarky.
Of course I know FCS plays majority FCS opponents that’s why I pointed out we UNDERPERFORMED several this year. Thats the point.
UNLV held us scoreless for 59+ minutes and yet Utah Tech scored on them in the first four minutes of their game. That’s unsettling.
USC, Auburn, UCLA, and others have losing records and have enough Alums and $ to be winning.
Must be more difficult to win than Cougar fans realize.
So the coach comes in in December and did what he could to replace all of the good players we lost to the portal, and all of them are playing elsewhere this season. There is a reason we were picked to be last in the conference by all of the publications and analysts, the guy is starting from scratch without the benefit of a huge NIL bag.
Give him a reasonable time to get our roster in tact, like two or three years. I am still sold on him and know he will turn us around. He is just a coach, he doesn’t perform miracles.
Oh, and regardless you can still expect me to post predictions of an undefeated season every year until I kick the bucket; regardless of what the facts are.
It’s funny how some of you guys predicted how bad we would be and when he proves you right you want to run him off. You remind me of what Coach Yeoman said about the former Aggie head coach who was fired after 3 years of mediocre football. He told the Taxi Squad, “It was a good thing the Aggies were impatient and fired Wilson because he would have probably won the conference if he stayed. But now they have to start over and go through another 2 or 3 years of rebuilding.” Coach Yeoman was right.
Our 2025 recruiting class is ranked 8th in Big 12 by 247 sports.
Not likely to be a Top 25 team next year.
Is possible to be much improved. Be a Bowl Team. But not a powerhouse.
Unfortunately in these times you don’t have 2-3 years to rebuild. Not when others are doing it in one season.
Crap results leads to crap recruiting and mediocre teams. We have been down this spiral before. Finishing 2-10 or 3-9 is not going to help recruiting or keep the ones we have.
The team needs to go out and show they belong even if we lose the game. We have not shown we belong in several games this year.
