Off The Fritz Bandwagon

I think we are surprised because the glaring negatives are items that fall squarely on the shoulders of the head coach

-Discipline
-Being Prepared
-Consistency
-Offensive Creativity
-Competiveness

Nobody expected this to be a playoff squad…but those areas listed above were not only expected as givens…they were advertised as givens with THIS coaching hire.

LOL! Now some B12 schools are just random flyovers? That’s not what we were saying 5 years ago when we DESPERATELY needed to be in this conference. If you follow that line of thought, Alabama would also be a random flyover school as would Nebraska and a whole bunch of other P4’s.

Yes. Years of experience and a promise of those.

If we do not get it this year, my concern is that it won’t happen. Just the pessimist in me.

UH1927 … hard to disagree with you at this point. Let’s look at each of your points.

-Discipline: I believe the team has progressed in this area. Especially on defense. Still plenty of room to grow. My grade = B-.

-Being Prepared: If the assistants aren’t adequately preparing their players each week, it is up to CWF to step in and ‘encourage’ the assistants to step up their game. Perhaps some of the players aren’t as committed as they should be. They realize this team isn’t going to the playoffs or even a bowl game and just aren’t as committed as they should be. Hard to coach that mid-season. Changes have to be made in offseason. My Grade = D

-Consistency: Falls in line with being prepared. If you’re not prepared, it’s very difficult to be consistent. Talent becomes a factor here. See QB1 & 2. My Grade: C+ on defense, D- on offense.

-Offensive Creativity: When you hire a defensive coach as head coach, he has to depend on his OC for this and vice versa. In our case, can we expect our defense minded head coach to step in and insert more creativity in the offense? I think that would be unreasonable. However, CWF can/should instruct his OC to be much more creative. We also need to consider the ability of the QB’s to execute such creativity, which I believe is a significant part of the problem. For CWF, this will have to be addressed in the offseason with new players and/or a new OC. My Grade = F.

-Competitiveness: CWF can’t insert ability and intelligence into a player. They can be coached up to improve from where they are at. Generally, you’re not going to take either of our QB1 or 2 and coach them up to become Tom Brady and you’re not going to coach up any of our WR’s to become Jerry Rice. Their foundation is just too low, but they can improve. That being said, getting better at each of the other four areas above will greatly improve competitiveness. My Grade = D

I believe the talent will be upgraded over the offseason and moving forward. Some coaching changes may need to be made. At this point, I have to place faith in CWF to get it done based on his track record.

Go Coogs!

QB - The situation is dire, neither option turns out to be a good one. Good recruits coming in, need a transfer with experience.
OL - Only one return and a crap shoot of bodies brought in just to field a team. Clearly the new transfers were not starters for their previous teams and may not be that good. Sometimes, even with good coaching, they may be physically slow, and other difficulties.

Tough to run or throw when the flood gates are open.

Until we get a QB, it will be tough sledding. But help is on the way with CWF outstanding recruits.

I work with people from those schools and they refer to schools in the city as city slicker schools.

So I tell them they went to flyover schools.

F = Fantastic … thank you!

The only “random flyover state school” you have lost to is Iowa State. This is great way to make enemies and a textbook example of trying to bite the hand that feeds you. What I’m about to say is personal and relating specifically to the attitude shown here, so I want to make it clear to the vast majority of you fine folks that in no way should be taken as an indictment of Cougar fans in general. You guys have been great:

Now, sir…If anything, the likes of Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF are seen as second rate commuter schools and glorified Junior Colleges compared to what we have up here in Nowhereville, USA. There was plenty of hesitancy to bring you all in on that alone, not to mention wishy washy fan bases with a ton of regional competition that struggle to turn out in person or draw a lot of eyeballs consistently, especially when the going gets tough. We were just as desperate to save our conference as you were to get in one at the time. If we had known the Pac12 was going to implode shortly after, it’s debatable whether Wazzou or Oregon State would be sitting in your seat today.

KU is pretty flush with cash from their exclusive Adidas deal. They have it because they draw a national fan base in basketball, and they absolutely dominate the basketball market from the Rockies to the Mississippi in the mid to upper Midwest. It’s one of, if not THE best academic school in the existing Big 12, and it’s the main university serving the KC metro in a number of ways.

ISU has been cashing big boy checks for decades, whether they deserved it or not. They draw more eyeballs than Houston, UCF and Cincy combined on average. ISU’s enrollment, alumni base, and academics are more than enough and nothing to scoff it. They average 45,000+ season tickets and have the 2nd largest stadium in the Big 12. And they FILL it, win or lose. They also have some of the highest ticket prices in the Big 12, and fans pay it without hesitation. Iowa State’s fan base in sheer numbers is not as big as some our neighbors, no doubt. But pound for pound they take a back seat to nobody in the entire country in terms of actually showing up and putting their money where their mouth is on a consistent per capita basis.

ISU is certainly no poverty program that nobody cares about. Not be a longshot. Is it hard to recruit here? Sure is! But that hasn’t stopped us from building top teams in football and basketball, and I dont see any reason for that to change any time soon. So what does location matter anyways, really? Its about the actual product on the field or the court at the end of the day, isnt it?

You should worry more about yourself than who you are losing to. We’re doing just fine in flyover country.

It must be difficult to draw fans when there is cow tipping available.

I don’t agree with his flyover take, but don’t say this above then say the crap you said right after it. You can either say one or the other but don’t talk out both sides of your mouth.

Either say the first part and don’t say the second, or take all of your crap back to your clone board.

Our cows are not as desirable as Nebraska cows, hence why their cows are more thoroughly and consistently made sweet love to over there.

We all have perception issues. Its not like we didnt try to get into the big 10.

Dont shoot the messenger. I didnt say that I feel that way, simply that it’s out there.

There gonna be a few aggies who would disagree about who has the most lovable cows.

Whatever… You were pretty quick to fire it up for not feeling that way. Keep that crap out of here

We all have nicknames for each other.
It’s nothing new on message boards or in the workspace.

I hear it all the time at my company or through family and friends.

Absolutely. I appreciate your response.

On 2nd thought, continue to fire away with the flyover stuff. Its not a big deal. Forgive my ranting syllioquy.

Meh, let the other state’s farmers have the sexiest cows.

Now, if you want to talk who has the best corn and soybeans? We will fight to the death to protect our honor.

I think some people confuse lack of execution with not being prepared. As fans, we have zero insights into how the coaches prepare a team. However, lack of execution if front and center for all to see. When blockers are running into each other, that’s execution.
