The biggest problem for Herman with folks is that his whole schtick is being an “Us against the world A-hole” to everyone.
When it works, see 2015 and OU he’s your A-hole. If it’s not working, he’s just an A-hole who no one likes. Then your welcome gets work out really quick.
The other part is when a coach is at a smaller school, you can get away with a “us against the world” mentality.
When you’re coaching at one the the largest schools in the country, one with a storied history, it doesn’t work. Because you are the world. UT needs to hire a coach from a peer school. One that is the largest school in the state, one that is already coaching in the upper echelon. The last coach that fit those criteria was Mack Brown, who happens to be the last coach with an real level of sustained success at the 40 acres…
herman’s schtick worked here and he could’ve kept it going for a good while (and too bad because he was on a roll and started something great). austin wasn’t the place to try the same thing. if anything some of those guys needed to be knocked off their pedestals.
The ghost of DKR haunts every Head Football Coach at UT.
In 20 seasons DKR won 10 SWC Titles and 3 National Titles.
Thus every subsequent Coach must do the same.
Touchdown Tommy knew this going in. Everyone does.
After next Saturday in Waco, when his ‘Horns move to a 6-5 record, Tommy will believe that mucking Bevo’s stall is better than being The Longhorns’ Head Coach.
TTech has a bad record, but they have quite a few close games with decent teams. And for some reason TTech sometimes turns into the New England Patriots when they play the horns. So this could be another UT loss.
And the horns will make a bowl game when the season ends. I’m hoping that is another loss as well.
I agree with you. In addition at UH he had a limited amount of influential boosters to please or contend with. In Austin, its a full time job to work with the various boosters that want to tell the coach how to run the program.
In the long run Briles, Sumlin and possibly Herman could have stayed at UH and made more money. Right?
THIS is an interesting “what if?” Been asked and discussed many times. We may find out the answer if Holgorsen works out as planned.
In reality, the answer to the money question is “no, definitely not.” They got so much money at their landing spots it’s insane to think we could have ever gotten there even with twice as much time.
As the the overall, “legacy” and “respect” categories are concerned… ESPN isn’t going to be looking to add any of our cast-offs as analysts anytime soon. Winners get respect/legacy, not losers with money.
While I won’t ever forget Southern Miss, I liked Sumlin the best of the three when considering a long term coach. Never thought much of Briles and we all saw how that turned out. Herman’s schtick would have grown old.
Sumlin sucked without Case and he didn’t recruit QB’s. He would have always had a good staff though. I think Herman could have recruited some good players had he stayed. Briles’ teams were undisciplined on special teams and penalties but damn, he could recruit elite QB’s for his system.
Had Baylor not dropped a lot of money on him we would have had our second Heisman trophy winner.
I see Briles as the best offensive mind of the three (Herman, Sumlin and Briles) but his defense and special teams were not good. And the discipline was not there with usually 1 to 2 personal foul / late hits each game that were frustrating. If I wanted to design an offense though, I would pick Briles’ mind.
Sumlin did well with his coordinator picks.
Herman sold the program to the masses the best.
Reverse order for me on level of dislike I have for each.
Man, I hate defending him, but if Herman had stayed, we had a tremendous class coming in that would have filled many of the areas that we are currently hurting in. Granted, that class was largely put together by telling recruits he would probably take them to his next job, but we’re talking hypotheticals.
I also think Herman’s Schtick wouldn’t have worn out here. We are an “underdog” fanbase and want someone to rile up the masses for us. Herman knew how to do that and would continue to keep us relevant and in the national conversation which we all would have loved. He fit here almost too perfectly which is sort of why he doesn’t really fit in Austin at all…there’s a reason why we don’t like the Longhorns and they don’t really like us (yes, I know that there are those that think they ignore us, and they do to a point. However, when our name comes up, they look down their nose at us like we are lesser beings).
Perfect storm really. Too bad he didn’t stay as we all could have had some fun times together.
