Well, it seems to me that Biden was simply saying that we would provide close air support PROVIDED the targets were properly “cleared.”
Nearly every HQ has “targeting clearance” protocols that have to be met before an air strike is launched. I assume that that’s what he’s referring to here.
Hell, when I worked at an Infantry Brigade HQ in Alaska, our BDE Tactical Operations Center had a SOP for clearance of fires. The Battle Captains would yell “Clearance of Fires…Clearance of Fires.” At that point, each staff entity in the TOC would immediately look at their maps. The Battle Captain would then provided an eight digit grid coordinate. Each Staff section had to make sure that, from their perspective, that target was cleared for fire.
One time, at the Joint Readiness Training Center, the Brigade Chaplain (SERIOUSLY!!!) ended up calling off a strike (by stating “not clear”) because he looked at his situational map, and determined that a Church was too “danger close.” This, after every other staff section in the TOC had looked at their maps and called out “clear.”
I assume that that’s what Biden meant, and as long as it is, I wouldn’t have any problem with it. We want to minimize civilian casualties and collateral damage as much as possible.
Regarding McCrystal and McKiernan.
McCrystal definitely deserved to be fired. His staff was VERY unprofessional in its remarks about their civilian masters.
A lot of people supported firing McKiernan at the time.
However, there’s a new book out called “The Afghanistan Papers.” Its author was on the PBS Newshour last night, and he said that McKiernan may have been fired simply for saying that the war in Afghanistan wasn’t going well…which was news that Obama apparently didn’t like hearing.
Not sure if that’s true or not, I haven’t read the book or seen the evidence. Just repeating what that guy said.

No, you zeroed on a small quote which you yanked out of context with great gusto. The full text where that quote came from gives plenty of explanation.
McKiernan wasn’t the first and won’t be the last general fired for telling the truth when it’s a bad truth.
Bryant it makes no sense whatsoever. After 20 years, 20 years you would think (it should not even be a question) that WE know what is going on. This is a terrible and abject summary of events.
It is not $50B, $60B, $70B, $80B no it is $90Billions worth of equipment that we left behind. The taliban now have more “power” that the annual military budget that France and Germany have.
The taliban now is equipped for year’s to come.
How in the world was this permitted to happen? Arms you and I paid for. Praying that we do not get killed by our guns.
Well when you nation build then create and equip an army with stuff, but then they promptly hand it over and go home that’s usually a really fast way to equip an opposing force.

This is being reported both here and Europe. Planes with American citizens, green card holders and allies is now stranded at the Kabul Airport. The taliban wants the U.S. to recognize them as a legitimate government.
You also have chartered flights with Americans wanted to leave Afghanistan but our State Department is refusing for them to leave…pack of lies continues
