Oh yesss. I’ve never been to Lubbock or plan to but Austin is growing into a Metropolitan city and no longer just a college town. Especially with a lot of imports from Cali. Right now would be the perfect time for Beard to go to Austin his alma mater. Nothing against Shaka but Beard would be a perfect fit there.
Not saying he would win there but for him personally is the perfect situation.
To be clear, UT Basketball is not UT Football. Shaka’s seat was barely starting to get a little bit warm this year, and he hasn’t won a tournament game in the 6 years he’s been there. They’ve had 3 coaches in the last 30 years, and this one’s leaving on his own accord. Not exactly a short leash.
For Herman and beard I can understand it. If UH was a mess (wasn’t that long ago, the 90’s) and they came calling me as an alumni to come in and fix it, I probably would be star struck enough to overlook things because when I went there it was different and maybe I can do it again. Herman coached there and got a graduate degree so he is kind of an alumni, but beard went to undergraduate there, correct? He also coached under turnaround Tom.
We can talk smack about that all day, but as an alumni it hits that heart string, and probably is healthy for the bank as well.
He inherited a good program, and he was 0-3 in the tournament with two substantial upsets over six years. How many Power Conference programs, do you think, would put up with that?
a ton…Texas hadnt been to a sweet 16 for almost decade prior to his arrival…
remove the “brand” of Texas …Texas on accomplishments is mid-level power team… one that just won the big 12 tourney championship, and got a 2 seed
im not saying the fanbase cant be disappointed … but real discussions about being fired is not what the situation would be in most power conferences… which is the point people are making about beard…
beard can replicate the exact same performance shaka had at texas, at tech…the idea of firing him wont even be brought up (3 tourney, 1 nit champion in 5 years)
it’s based on on the court stuff, the issue is not so much performance but expectations…expectations are already high at Texas… then add the idea of being surpassed by baylor and texas tech
UT is one of the most arrogant institutions on the planet. That said, you have to always have an exit strategy. There are too many potential pitfalls: two consecutive losses to OU in football…lose to a small in-state school in bball…etc etc.
Texas boosters care a lot about bragging rights.
Edwin Simmons: “the guys that gave us jobs had Rembrandts in their homes. I know cause they told me every day.”
Imagine how the feel right now watching Texas Tech, Baylor, and Houston viewed as the class of the state …way ahead of that Burnt Orange program.
Even small Abilene Christian punched them in the mouth. Abilene Christian!!! And for the whole country to see!!!
Now I ask you, how upset do you think those very proud, albeit irrational donors are right now?
Texas may have been the king of Texas pre 2010 but we are in a new decade
they have a Network that nobody watches
the 2nd Flagship, Texas A&M, slipped away to the better conference and are knocking on that playoff door
the University of Houston blocked their expansion into the city of Houston
they can’t find a football or basketball coach to save their lives…plus, to add insult to injury, they are paying BIG BUCKS to get out of their mistakes
Texas Tech, Baylor, and Houston have zoomed past them in basketball hierarchy in the state.
Beard is unlikely to change his view on UT from the last time they chased him. They never gave him a chance to coach there when he was coming up, and they don’t offer the administrative support he has now. He gets what he wants now, and Istanbul the top of the pay scale. He seems like more of a Tech alum, since he’s coached there so long.
