SMU didn’t deserve a playoff spot!

They have the worse loss but they also have much better wins. We should be judging teams based on their entire body of work & not just 1 game. And yes, BYU’s resume is better in all ways than Miami’s. You’re just nitpicking 1 loss to try & prove a point. And you’re neglecting the fact that Miami:

  1. Nearly lost to to Cal, only won by 1
  2. Lost to (7-5) GT
  3. Lost to (9-3) #21 Syracuse
  4. Nearly lost to (8-4) Louisville

While BYU:

  1. Beat #10 SMU on the road
  2. Blew out a ranked KSU
  3. Beat (8-4) Baylor on the road
  4. Barely beat Utah in a rivalry game on the road.
  5. Lost a close game by only 4 points @ home to a red hot KU
  6. Lost by only 5 to Big 12 Champ ASU, ON THE ROAD

Miami did absolutely NOTHING to suggest that they had a better resume than BYU & the H2H in SOR, SOS, & best wins reinforce that point.

5 of BYU’s wins came against the bottom 5 teams in the league. 2 of their 3 non-conference games were against abysmal competition. So their resume immediately boils down to three good wins and two losses (1 that I would call a bad loss). The wins according to MC grade out at #9, #24, and #30. Two of those on the road. That’s solid. But their two losses came in their last three games and unfortunately we all know that an early loss is easier to recover from. SMU’s top wins are @Louisville #18, @Duke #39, TCU #40, BC #44, Pitt #49. Miami’s top wins are @Lousville #18, @Florida #29, VT #37, Duke #39. Additionally SMU had an average MOV of 19 points, Miami had a MOV of 20.5, and BYU had a MOV of 10. So yes BYU has the slight edge in wins but they also Miami and SMU did beat more top 50 teams. And they made it through their schedules far more convincingly. SMU clearly had the better loss. And for the record I won’t even factor the ACC title game against them in a comparison with BYU. With Miami the losses thing is a little more debatable. But their MOV is pretty damn impressive and yah their top win isn’t as impressive but 4 top 40 wins vs 3 definitely leaves room for debate.

Even under the old system of four teams there were plenty of blowouts.

The football playoff is not going to be March Madness where you get an underdog every year making a run. Football is a different game and the first round is not on at a neutral site. Plus the break between the end of the season and the playoffs gives teams a chance to heal up.

The football playoffs are going to be very chalky in the first round. The second round though will be interesting. The sires are neutral and the higher ranked team hasn’t played in awhile.

Beating TCU is no great distinction.

Even UH did that.

If that’s the best that SMU can point to, then they have little to recommend.

Bottom line: the ACC’s highest ranked team couldn’t beat the Big 12’s third best team at home.

I guess that’s why SMU lost to a Big 12 team that was no better than the Big 12’s third best….AT HOME.

It is not the point Monte. The sec teams schedule a bunch of cup cakes. Are you going to exclude them too? Again, I CAN’T STAND smu.

Without Cam Ward Miami probably ends with a losing record. Imagine how much better we would have been if Cam had followed in his dads footsteps and come here

No one knows who deserved what till they decided it on the field. That’s how its supposed to be.

Yah we also beat KState. Which is BYUs second best win. So that argument runs itself into the ground pretty quick.

If SMU, as the highest ranked ACC team, can’t beat the no better than third best Big 12 team at home….then any argument that the ACC is better than the Big 12 likewise runs into the ground pretty quickly.

Sorry Bro, but a win over a mediocre TCU team that got thumped by UH isn’t impressive and isn’t enough to cancel that out.

SMU had NO wins that were worthy of giving them consideration for a shot in the playoffs.

These are unintelligent comments that can come and bite their own team in the same position. If cougars were in the same position as SMU, I am sure we would all want them on College playoffs. So, there is the answer.

uhlaw does not understand the win loss record. He does not understand that the field is the great equalizer…not video games.

I know you’re invested in seeing SMU flop because you’ve made 10k posts about them in the last year but they were good this year. Anyway if they played right now I don’t think BYU would stand a chance. At the end of the day we shouldn’t be upset at SMUs inclusion. We should be upset at Tennessee’s. Or we should be mad at Colorado for losing to Nebraska. Or BYU and ISU for losing to Kansas. Or Tech for losing to Wazzu. Or at the league for having some teams play conference teams in the non-conference (like Baylor/Utah). And again calling TCU (who finished in a tie for 5th) mediocre isn’t an own. All you’re doing is putting the league down.

I’m only interested in seeing SMU flop because it VINDICATES my CORRECT assertion that they didn’t belong in the playoffs, and also VINDICATES my prediction that Penn State was gonna butt stomp them because they were undeserving and shouldn’t have been playing in the playoffs in the first place.

Of course, I was VINDICTATED on both that assertion and that prediction.

Why is it that…in the end…I’m always ultimately vindicated and proven correct?

No it’s because you spent the whole offseason saying their move to the ACC was going to blow up on them. And you’ve been shown to be pretty wrong on that. One of the bigger L’s I’ve seen someone catch Lol

Playing a rivalry game the week before removed a lot of starch

It very likely still will.

Can you guarantee that the ACC’s biggest brands won’t leave?

The two biggest have already sued to do exactly that.

And WHEN (not if) those brands do leave…SMU will be in a devalued conference and essentially left having purchased a LEMON.

STAY TUNED!!!

Remember, my other predictions were already correct. I said that FSU wouldn’t stand for having to play SMU, and sure enough…just weeks after a schedule was publishing forcing them to play SMU…they were filing lawsuits.

VINDICATION!!!

Vindicated

Bro?

Let this be a lesson to SMU that buying your way into the playoffs will not exclude you from being blown out.

I would trade this season with SMU any day.

Making the CFP top 12 is the goal.

Buying players is legal and if we had the financial backing, we would do it also.

We were blown out by Cincinnati and Kansas. Where did that get us?
