Memphis gonna finally get that ACC invite… 9 years later
I don’t get the big deal… I bet all 50 of smu’s fans will pack the stadium to watch them play Boston college
Stanford and Cal are also not getting media money.
All three should be getting post season tournament/bowl money.
If that is over $8-10mil/yr, then it would be a better situation for SMU than staying in the AAC, plus they play better competition and are aligned with better academic schools.
Also, I heard that the western schools will play Olympic sports in Dallas against the eastern schools so travel costs would be ‘halved’
Not a completely terrible situation for basically the last rescue boats off of G5 Titanic. I would be wondering why the SMU boosters didn’t pony up (ugh) before to put SMU in a better spot for realignment but whatever
No worse than 3rd or 4th in football and possibly 2nd or 3rd in hoops. It’s a good move for them.
Congrats to SMU!
It’s sort of like the Reverse Death Penalty. All that money got them in trouble the first time and almost killed their program. This time it may have saved their program.
I think some school presidents finally figured it out.
With the Big East, the presidents followed the lead of Notre Dame and rejected ESPN deal. League decimated, except for ND which always had a lifeboat.
PAC12, followed lead of USC/UCLA and league obliterated. Rest of schools looking for landing spots.
BigXII, followed lead of Texas and league survived only due to great new leadership from CBY. But it was dire situation when Horns and Sooners bolted, leaving the rest high and dry.
The lesson - never assume your school is in the same boat as those other schools. It’s not. There is no room on those big school’s boat for anyone but themselves.
That’s what those voting for expansion in the ACC did.
Mack Brown said it best… “I worry about that for our game and for those universities,” North Carolina coach Mack Brown told ESPN’s Paul Finebaum two years ago. “I think we will see some schools that just can’t have enough money, enough facilities, enough commitment selling those tickets, be attractive enough for the TV contracts that they will lose who they are and drop down to another level.”
Seems like the complete polar opposite of the feeling in the room at the Big 12 meetings. After reading the ACC comish comments, there is nothing but pure uncertainty coming from that room. The second article does explain how the travel burden is almost exclusively a problem for the pacific teams.
The decision was purely financial, and he is unsure if it even satisfies the current ACC members. Wild, odd strategy…
I remember I had a bad feeing when we were invited to the Big East and SDSU and Boise St. were part of the package.
Wonder if the ACC BBall tourney will ever be in Texas?
That is the one thing that is exciting, we can hop in a car and watch nearly every team in America, minus the Big 10! Good point, I wonder if this indirectly opens up non-conference games for UH. Duke playing UH before traveling to SMU
We just need to get Rice into the Big 10 and we can watch every team in America
Guys, we have walked through that desert and it took us 28 years to find the promised land of the B12. We did everything we could to get there, but we don’t know what the future will hold for us or the B12.
I don’t think we have room to throw shade on another who did what they had to do to get there. You know, glass houses and all.
Texas and Florida are now the only states with three Power Conference representatives.
Cali?
Edit: my bad I see what you are saying now
By power conf representatives I thought you meant the teams not the conferences
UCLA + USC= B1G 10
Stanford + CAL= ACC
SMU= ACC
Baylor+ Texas Tech+ TCU + Houston= Big 12
Texas + Texas A& M= SEC
Miami + Florida State= ACC
Florida= SEC
UCF= Big 12
There is no scenario where staying in the AAC is better.
Regarding big brands. Some Yormark comments after the Big12 signed the deal with ESPN indicated that ESPN’s part of the deal was to help in building brands through more highlighting teams and “story telling”. IF that happens, we can control our own destiny if we can make ourselves one of those big brands - gotta win
What! Gentlemen…this is what they call “SIMP” behavior. Please do not allow you sons and grandsons to act like this…
I cannot stand Smooo…but got to give the devil…its due. They figured out away to get into the big boy club.
