Stadium Construction & Updates pt2

LET ’ EM  KNOW

I took a tour exploring the architecture styles on the UH campus with the Preservation Houston organization…

It was interesting how they noted that part of the “uniqueness” to UH’s seemingly incongruent architectural style is that each building was constructed at different times, when different styles were en vogue (and ofc, fulfilling different school needs).

Made me appreciate each bldg’s unique style, but I have a thing for Art Deco style. :man_shrugging:

I wish we didn’t haveto change the orientation. I feel we lost alot when we did. Certainly tailgating but also the ability to get the fans involved… well, maybe winning again will help. :open_mouth:

I remember doing the “Houston” and “Cougars” chant at Robertson during the Case years. Electric. I yelled my lunch out not to be outdone by some NOOB students. Good times.

Have to admit, I like brick facades for college stadiums. Over all I like TDECU, easy in and out, ability to walk around it, I don’t even have problems with the restrooms. I just think a partial brick exterior could have been worked in really well to bring in a modern look combined with traditional college feel. Cost would have been the only issue. Archways and gaps with the metal would still allow airflow.

i’m not a fan of the tdecu exterior either, doesnt look good to me but what do i know; i liked the HOF better too

I’ve always liked the facade, from day 1. I have no complaints about the stadium. It does everything I need.

#1 - great views
#2 - beer
#3 - toilets

Only I thing I want is more signature wins there, but that will come with time

Haha winning definitely helps, but I hear what you’re saying…

Like a lot of things, I think tailgating fell victim to UH’s growing pains. Back to back to back projects, all the leadership/coaching changes, the city working on Cullen, the list goes on… seems like it got lost in the shuffle.

It’s definitely something UH should focus on improving. Fan engagement across the board should be top of the list imo

Hey now, your opinion’s valid too! the architects called a brick exterior “false historicist” lol …funny but also true for UH. Limestone / Art Deco would prob be my pick but there was just no way to afford it.

It needs 300 level bathrooms.

I like the look of the stadium. Looks modern and high tech. I know we didn’t have a big budget, but wish it was taller so you could see it from the freeway. Free advertising that could be seen daily by commuters.

I always liked the idea of having Cullen stop at Elgin and be a really wide sidewalk with large green spaces on each side all the way to Cougar Place or Wheeler Ave.

The green spaces would have tailgating areas, possibly electric hookups and that would be main the tailgating row for everyone (obviously the closer in the more expensive, though the RV’s would prob still be separate).

Cullen splits the campus and not sure maybe someone older than myself knows if Wheeler ever ran all the way through TSU? It obviously doesn’t now.

Too bad all the work on Cullen was just done, but just hope and ideas for the future to be a top notch tailgating school.

….you ever been to a daytime game at the Dynamo stadium? Because that thing has a solid exterior, which basically turns it into a brick oven. Non-shaded parts of the stadium are basically uninhabitable. Anyone that was at the UH-Memphis game in 2013 knows what I’m talking about.

I was there and swore I would never set foot in that piece of carp stadium again for any reason.

And looking back at the weather, it wasn’t even that hot! Highs were in the upper 80s, which isn’t super uncommon here for that time of year! But the stadium has near zero airflow, and it turns the sun into a death ray. You get the same effect basically anywhere that’s similarly built; Baylor, Miami, the Texans/Astros when they open the roof — if you don’t have decent airflow, you see seats in the sun clear out anytime it gets above, like, 85 degrees, and that’s being generous.

Don’t we get 300 bathrooms with the new end zone addition? Maybe remembering that wrong

Awesome ideas. They align well with the Centennial MP… it has frameworks for a green belt / green spaces, wider paths, and parking only on the outer perimeter.

If all goes to plan, the walk from the east garages by the Den the whole way to Cullen and the stadium will be pretty awesome!

I believe the bridge takes care of the bathrooms at that level. Concession too.

It would be nice if the toilet door close in the men’s room on the North side. I pointed this out to Nunez and he said, “I’ll take care of it.” We’ll see. And I love the exterior of TDECU (or Space City Stadium, whatever). It’s unique and modern. Screw traditional. p.s. I’ll be 85 in two months and hate things (and beliefs) that say, “But we’ve always done it that way.”

Yeah, as somebody that’s been to quite a few “traditional” stadiums, I definitely would rather watch a game at SCFS (I’m calling it by the better name starting now) than Jordan-Hare or Beaver Stadium or Kyle Field or DKR. The fact that you can see the game from the concourse is, by itself, enough to give SCFS an advantage for me.

On the other hand people stay in their seats because they’d miss the game if they got up. I went to a game at Kyle field a couple years, got up to get a beer at halftime and the concourse was notably empty.

They didn’t want to miss the game during halftime?
