You dont think the only home game for the Horns and Sooners combined is OU hosting UT 2 weeks before the rematch of RRR?
If I was a Big12 schedule maker that is exactly what I would do so nothing strange there!
Do we play UT or OU in football?
We arenât a rival of UT, but that doesnât mean they donât hate us, or we donât hate them.
They were our rivals but both schools have a large segment of the fanbase now who have never seen us play each other and they donât understand the older fans hatred of the other school.
I think in the state of Texas you learn to hate any school that is drawing attention. We donât have to play Baylor to hate them.
Rivalries are never created so its a bad idea. UCF was never really a rival of ours even in the American. Some school had to pair with UCF way out in a deserted island and unfortunately UH was the odd man out on this oneâŠ
Whelp, maybe this helps build a Florida recruiting pipeline???
Texas hates us? We havenât played them in decades. Theyâre hardly aware we exist. You might find the odd senior citizen who still remembers the 70s, but they would be few and far between.
Sam, I still remember the fifties.
No mention of the space cup?
Pretty prophetic
The SWC ultimately failed because it was too Texas-centric. I will say this. UH moved to C-USA and AAC, two conferences with a bigger geographic footprints, and UH was never able to equal the rivalries it had in the SWC.
Part of the fun of rivalries is geographic proximity. Who are the best candidates for a UH rivalry in the B12? You donât have to leave the State of Texas. Texas Tech and Baylor are top candidates. They have fan bases in Houston that can attend the games and support their school. Their bands can travel and be part of the pageantry. Rivalries increase ticket sales, fan interest and media coverage.
I have stated in posts before that the manufactured rivalry between UH and UCF, using space as the hook, is too much of a reach, has nothing to do with sports and does not appeal to me. Will I still go to the games? Absolutely.
I will accept nothing less than a T38 fly over when that game arrives
Close geographical rivalries generate what might best be called âwater cooler bragging rights on Monday at work.â
The SWC was ideal for that because here in TX, most of the college sports fans that college educated professionals work with at the office were fellow SWC graduates. When people come into the break room on Monday morning to get water or coffeeâŠit was cool to be able to sayâŠâheyâŠmy SWC team just beat your SWC team.â
It was the same for the PAC on the West Coast.
I was largely UNtrue in CUSA and the AAC, or if nothing else, BARELY true.
The Big 12 gives us more such bragging rights opportunities in that regard.
It also gives you bragging rights at churchâŠ
I have no problem with having UCF as a rivalry game of sorts. They were in the same conference, we have the space hook and have played the I believe11 times if not more.
ND/USC, Ohio State/Michigan, Alabama/LSU?
@norbert, You forgot Texas vs Oklahoma, Florida vs Georgia and a ton of others. Those are well established rivalries that cross state lines. UH does not have any of those. And no, Cincinnati, UCF and Memphis are not candidates.
