Damn straight, playa! You want a builder that brings a culture. I don’t mind a splash hire but find one that’s won something
I could see Deion eventually being the black Barry Switzer or Jimmie Johnson. Someone who brings in recruits by the bucket. Someone who brings a group of renegades to your town and scorched earth. But I’m not convinced he can coach against the Gundy’s and Aranda’s of the profession yet. He needs a little more experience against really good defenses.
What’s funny is that I am skeptical of splash hires and skeptical of a known 2-3 year coach but Deion is an exception to both for me. A coach that sets a winning tone in the Big 12 and moves on would have a lasting effect. And Deion is next-level splash compared to any other splash hire I can think of and he’s a splash in a way that fits with our school in particular (compared to, say, Urban Meyer).
As far as assistants, I think he’s actually well-positioned there too. I don’t know if there is an assistant coach in the country that wouldn’t at least take his call and he’s a salesman. Not saying he’d swipe a coordinator from Georgia or anything, but it’d be a different thing than Applewhite or Dana.

That would be the Game Thread from last night. Clown show in charge of letting SMOO drop 77 on you.
Deion has played football on every major level, been coached by some of best minds in FB. … Don’t think he was paying attention, he’s motivated and loves his craft and sport, and those young men he coaches. Hire Coach Sanders we are good to go to the next level imo
I’ll be honest I would rather have the UTSA coach….he strikes me as a Patterson type guy……really good coach who may stay awhile.
I would not be totally against Deon because I know the recruiting would be top 20……as long as he surrounded himself with great coaches and not just buddies then I might be on board.
When I thought we’d be in the market last year after early season mediocrity, Traylor was high on my list. But at this point not sure he is worth a $6m buyout. (Absolutely worth it if he wins, but he’s won so far off Frank Wilson’s amazing recruits so it’d be a gamble.)
Option A
Deion- would bring incredible excitement back to the University of Houston. He would earn immediate respect from his players and the media and possibly bring some big recruits with him as he rebuilds this program
Option B
Stay with a coaching staff for a 5th year that is mediocre on the field, below average in recruiting, and has brougt zero buzz to the University of Houston. Most of the attendance next season will be visiting fans. Most of us are on to the fact last year’s cupcake schedule was manufactured.
This is a no brainer to me. We can realky F up our entry to the Big12 if we don’t take this seriously. Option B + moving the UT game to NRG will tell me they aren’t committed to building UH culture…we are the pawns of the B12.
A year from now we will know for sure. I see no chance that Dana is bought out right now to get Traylor. That would be $25+ million counting assistants.
Traylor seems good but not a proven commodity yet let’s see how UTSA does next year without that QB, Traylor should have gotten out last year I’m sure he had some offers
I don’t know the feasibility of canning CDH this year, but I do think it would be wise for Pez to reach out and see if there is any opportunity or interest to bring Deion. If that door is open, then it should be explored.
The buyout is expensive but consider it an $18 mm marketing campaign which would pay back in hype, notoriety, and swag. UH would be darlings of ESPN.
Right. Though not just the QB. Frank Wilson’s recruiting was spectacular (I was envious) and Traylor has been winning with those recruits. I would consider hiring him based on winning with the recruits that Wilson couldn’t, but not paying that much for him.
