This week's Tulsa game will answer many questions

Beat Tulsa. Tulsa is a decent team. Most people are in the “we want to believe phase”.

Just win.

I hope after two weeks, people are calling us the worst 5-1 team in America.

A tough out?

Really?

After they got butt stomped by a I-FCS team?

Come on now.

If we lose to a team like that, regardless of how Tune might play, then Dana definitely needs to go.

If we can’t beat a team like that, and Cal-Davis can………then what does it say about us?

A loss vs Tulsa mean we’d need to go 6-1 the remainder of the way to get to 9 wins. 5-2 means we are 8-4 with 4-3 AAC record and likely finish 3rd in the West.

We are getting to skip UCF and Cincy in the AAC, our schedule will never be softer.

The transitive property is a tough one. The connection between Rice, Arkansas, Horn, Tech, and SFA should have us feeling extremely doubtful for future outcomes. I personally think the team did some growing up as far as grit during the navy game.

I just have concerns about the x’s and o’s on offense. Then add in the fact that Tulsa is left out of big 12 discussion and we now have a target on our backs.

Coogs operate best as the underdog but a 4 point spread in the eyes of Tulsa still isn’t going to snatch that mentality from them. They will be ready, and there will be plenty of pads popping in this game!

It means we ain’t ready for the PAC12

The. Pac12!!??

Because we didn’t really score an actual drive generated TD until late in the 3rd qtr against the worse team in AAC

Then … we may not be ready for …

the teams ABOVE the worse team in the AAC!!!

Answers to many questions … eh … I suspect if this were a multiple choice … the answer would most likely be … “D” none of the above …

Start Ike or Massoud (whatever) the third gatorade helper on the sideline and maybe we may have a chance for a decent finish this season …

SP+ Rankings for Week 4:

14 - Cincinnati
37 - UCF
40 - SMU
48 - Texas Tech
65 - Memphis
66 - Tulsa
75 - Houston
77 - Tulane
95 - Temple
98 - ECU
114 - Navy
122 - USF
123 - Rice
129 - UConn

Just on paper:
In light of how we played a #48 Tech, we should beat a #66 Tulsa.
In light of how we played a #114 Navy, we should lose to a #66 Tulsa.

No kidding? Have we sunk that low that we call a Tulsa team with a 1-3 record (7 pt. win over Arky State) a decent team? We squeak by Navy (1st half worst football I ever saw). We know what the Tulsa game will be like, we’ve seen it for 3 years. Say one thing for Dana he has lowered our expectations to a record level.

Tulsa played Okie State to within 5.

Tulsa played Ohio State close until the 4th quarter.

Tulsa is a decent team. I am not sure what happened with Cal - Davis, but Tulsa is going to give us all we want.

But that loss was repaid with Briles last game up there if you remember. I was there at a true horror story. Like they had our playbook.

Your correct, Tulsa is going to give us we want. Says a lot more about us than Tulsa.

We also beat Rice more convincingly than Arkansas did so I guess we are transitive 1-1 against the Horns and have a nice transitive win over the Aggies.

We have been spoiled with QB’s like Ware, Klingler, Kolb, Keenum, and Ward and it is obvious that Tune is not in the same class as those players. However, much of the problem he has had in the last couple of years has been due to the fact that our other players haven’t been in the same class as those who were on the teams that those other QB’s played on. We don’t have an Edwards, Aldridge, Avery, Carrier, Ayers, etc. on the receiving end either.

Saturday night it appeared to me that Tune tends not to notice open receivers on the side opposite the side with 3 receivers. The only time he seemed to see the whole field was when the receivers were split on both sides. Also, several times he had an open guy deep and he locked on the short pass for just a few yards. That conservative play did prevent interceptions but still, I thought we had chances to hit some TD’s deep that went begging. Of course, there is the distinct possibility he didn’t see the open guys because his view was obstructed by the linemen. Another possibility is that he did see the man but also saw crossing safeties that could swoop in for a pick. I saw a couple of interceptions last night by highly rated pros QB’s that were thrown to a WR that looked open at the time of the pass, but the defenders were able to cross into the pattern and pick off the pass.

But to me, his defining moment of the game was when he stood in and delivered the TD to Jones while getting a face full of the Navy LB who came in unobstructed and leveled Tune as he let it go. That was pure QB guts.

What happened with Cal Davis is Tulsa suspended a bunch of players and didnt play them against Cal Davis…The Tulsa that only lost 28-23 to an undefeated ranked Okie state team and played Ohio state nose to nose for 3 quarters, thats who Tulsa is…The same Tulsa that beat UCF last year and finished 2nd and played Cincy for the championship in 2020, and lost 27-20…We are an underdog for a reason…

The moment of truth comes on Friday.

We have never been a dog and won under Dana. Sure would be nice to pull an “upset”.

I am worried about this game, so that is normally a good sign.

We are still working a bunch of new faces into the offense. Henry looked really good with more playing time. We also have to work in Carter, Erwin, Herslow, and Green. That is a lot of new faces. I lean toward the offense getting better as they figure out the various pieces and what they do well.

Well it may not be too much of an embarrassment for us Friday night …

The nat’l audience will probably be switching over to the Iowa/Maryland game in 30 minutes and the BYU/UtahSt game at 8 …more competitive/closer games … and they won’t have to wait until the 4th qtr before we score our first TD … maybe … I will just be happy we will be saying goodbye to the crappy town of Tulsa and their dinky HS stadium … forever …

Tulsa’s defense is going to pressure Tune and force him to throw over the top. That’s where Tune has struggled for the last 2 1/2 years. If we can’t run the ball then it’s gonna be a long day for the Coogs. Our defense will keep it close but I’m not expecting a win on Friday.
