He’s being projected as a draft pick but could come back if he is not a first round lock. I’ve never watched a big before that would fit so well in our defensive scheme.
If Mick Cronin leaves or UCLA is going to be bad again I could see him transferring. But even if this happens this is just a pipe dream.
If J’wan leaves we need more depth in the front court. We’ll have McFarland next year(who is so good on defense already in practice) but I am doubting Lath getting meaningful minutes next year.
Next year we would have 4 or 5 bigs
Francis
Tugler
McFarland
Lath
And then maybe J’wan. With J’wan staying we might be good with frontcourt depth along with Arceneaux being here to be a versatile piece. But without him I think a veteran big would be very nice.
Next year could be a down year. But if the freshman come in and play well, Sharp keeps developing (I think he’ll be a consistent 20ppg/40%+ 3pt shooter next year). With more frontcourt depth and a possible pg from the portal we could be better than expected.
He has a covid year to use. Coach talked about J’wan next year so that made me think he may return. Usually next year in terms of talking about seasons means next season. When Coach talks about guys developing throughout the season he specifies it as this year, not next year.
2020 was a redshirt
And he played
2020-2021
2021-2022
2022-2023
2023-2024
So it’s be his sixth year but 5th year of playing because of the redshirt.
They were seen to be the laughing stock of the new big 12 but they have a lot of potential. Maybe they had a hard time recruiting in the American but being in a major city in a major league could help recruiting along with some results like Hendricks.
I actually don’t think Dawkins is a terrible coach. He had a really good year in 2019 and UCF was always a tougher opponent than they would seem to be. But he did underperform especially last year with the talent on the roster. That team was better than 7th in the American.
I actually like that they’re getting buzz right now. I root a little harder for Cincinnati and UCF because they’re our former conference mates and I want them to do well. The American conference was always underrated by the media in my opinion.
After thinking about it I doubt we bring in a big from the portal. Kelvin keeps mentioning J’wan coming back. So we’ll have J’wan, Francis, Tugler, McFarland as the bigs.
Obviously if J’wan leaves we’ll go portaling but I’m told he’s staying right now.
So if we assume J’wan stays then after bringing in a pg I think we have to get a scoring guard/wing.
This could be the projected lineup next year obviously depends on if Dunn, Shead, or cryer stays or goes. But even so everyone here (including the blank 1 and 3 spots) add up to 15. We have 13 spots and we have room to make 15 go to 13. I think McCarty could redshirt next year. I don’t think he’s ready and we’ll be well stocked in the guard department.
If are going to assume that we have enough bigs and bring a wing/guard I would be interested to the idea of Dusty Stromer.
We recruited him out of high school and we were in his top 4. Gonzaga is having a down year and the future is murky with them not having many lower classman to develop. Him and Braden Huff are really good but with NIL and the portal Gonzaga could really struggle. Being in the best basketball conference is a plus and he went to school and is friends with Mercy Miller.
I like him because he’s a great shooter but by developing and going into his sophomore year I think he’ll be a better all around scorer who could get his own shot at the college level. He was a great scorer in high school. And I like the way he can rebound and defend with his length. We just need Coach Alan Bishop to feed him a little more food.
After playing a B12 schedule this season, CKS will have a better idea of how to construct his roster in the off season. It is too early in the season to make that call now. Not only does CKS need to identify the team needs, he also has to factor in the players that are leaving and who may be available through the portal.
It would be huge for next year’s team if Roberts came back for another year, could be the difference in making a NC run! But I really don’t think it’s possible to expect a kid as highly rated as McCarty to redshirt imo. Plus we need some size /athleticism on the wings too.
I’m also not convinced that Lath & Wilson will remain for next season. No inside info, but don’t believe they’ve got the skill or right basketball IQ to get any minutes moving forward in the Big 12.
McCarty may be rated highly but he does not look ready. I’ve been watching him at IMG and he’s good but I don’t know if he’s ready to get regular rotation minutes at the next level. I seriously doubt he will get meaningful minutes next year. Which is why I think he could redshirt.
I think Miller is more ready to come in and play from day 1.
