Only thing that’s still bipartisan in this country, building things to blow up other people. Something everyone gets behind.

Worked for Reagan vs. the Soviets.

Just sayin’!

Dwight Eisenhower on the subject of war:

“I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”
Address before the Canadian Club, Ottawa, Canada, 1/10/46

“Guns and tanks and planes are nothing unless there is a solid spirit, a solid heart, and great productiveness behind it.”
Address to Economic Club of New York, Hotel Astor, 11/20/46

“War is mankind’s most tragic and stupid folly; to seek or advise its deliberate provocation is a black crime against all men. Though you follow the trade of the warrior, you do so in the spirit of Washington – not of Genghis Khan. For Americans, only threat to our way of life justifies resort to conflict.”
Graduation Exercises at the United States Military Academy, 6/3/47

“Possibly my hatred of war blinds me so that I cannot comprehend the arguments they adduce. But, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive war. Although this suggestion is repeatedly made, none has yet explained how war prevents war. Worse than this, no one has been able to explain away the fact that war creates the conditions that beget war.”
Remarks at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 10/19/50 [DDE’s Pre-Presidential Papers, Principal File, Box 196, Carnegie Institute]

“Because, therefore, we are defending a way of life, we must be respectful of that way of life as we proceed to the solution of our problem. We must not violate its principles and its precepts, and we must not destroy from within what we are trying to defend from without.”
Speech before NATO Council, 11/26/51 [DDE’s Pre-Pres. Papers, Box 197]

“Americans, indeed, all free men, remember that in the final choice a soldier’s pack is not so heavy a burden as a prisoner’s chains.”
Inaugural Address, 1/20/53

It’s funny how Americans ignore the wise knowledge of our leaders who know the horrors of war first hand and cavalierly toss it around with the notion of it as a means of settling conflict among nations especially with some now, who have the capability of utterly destroying human civilization as we know it. Man needs to put a end to war as means of settling disputes among nations or war will put a end to man.

You mean like Obamacare

What do you mean? Please expand the discussion. We’re adults here.

War is sometimes a necessary evil Bro.

As Robert Heinlein said in Starship Troopers:

“Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedom.”

Exhibit A :+1:

Just made my point. This type of thinking is what going to make man extinct along with the dinosaur. Except it won’t be a asteroid.

Don’t put money on it.

It would take a nuclear war, and the theory of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is pretty powerful deterrent against that.

I pray your right. Mad man don’t care about MAD or any other rational strategy if there intent is nihilism and want to see the world burn just because they want to and have the capability to make it happen

During Cold War I that’s probably true, though Cuban
Missile Crisis probably was inching very closely to
that resolve. And in 2022 you have nuclear capable North Korea with delivery systems and soon to be nuclear players in middle east lead by religious hardliners. So , the more players, the more chance for miscalculations. Is MAD still practical to place all humanity at risk ? There are those amongst us who believe a nuclear exchange is winnable.

People don’t realize how close we came nuclear war in the Cuban Missile crisis we came very close Russian submarine was about to launch nuclear tipped torpedoes, due to the USN dropping depth charges, thinking war had broken out fortunately his next in line officer prevented him

Came close again in 1980’s when the Soviets mistook a early warning system error for a multiple launch ICBM’s if a first strike by the USA fortunately the commander in charge decided not to retaliate.

1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident - Wikipedia.

Sooner or later our luck is going run out. Leaving things to serendipity is fool hearty and grave miscalculation on our part as a species. Need to eliminate war as a means of settlings disputes among nations. Utopian as it sounds it is only way forward. We must summon the courage vision and trust to do so . Beat our swords into plowshares.

Amen but it will take an evolution of many generations, I’m afraid and who knows what will happen before that. 21st problems will only be solved by 21st century solutions. Cyber security will be (if not already) more important than tanks and nuclear bombs.

I understand what your saying. One well placed Nuclear EMP over our country could knock out our entire power grid meaning computer and all.

Yikes, if that story is on the up and up, and I have no reason to doubt it, that is super scary !

I’ve read about some of it and it’s truly fascinating (as Spock would say). Real Ian Fleming cloak and dagger stuff.

Curtis LeMay wanted US ground forces to invade and bomb Cuba ala D-Day, killing lots of civilians but Kennedy said no. There was no love lost between the two and LeMay was infuriated at being dressed down. I guess he forgot who was boss. Don’t want to go all conspiracy theory but LeMay is mentioned with those militias headquartered in New Orleans that Lee Harvey Oswald and Howard Hunt had relationships with. Just saying.

Believe it, it’s true. My old man was part of SAC served on B-52 bomber during the crisis. He said in his later years they were on there way to Russia to drop there nuclear payloads if needed
The base we stayed on in Florida McCoy AFB which is now Orlando’s commercial airport. Place was occupied by the Army it was turned into a literal military camp of tanks, artillery and whatever else they needed to invade Cuba. As kid with my 5 older brothers it’s like something out of movie except real. It was real all to real looking back on it, without child’s eyes.

We are like children playing with fire except it’s nuclear fire and don’t really grasp the consequences of these weapons and what a mortal danger to man they are by those who continue to justify the existence and possession by man. Morally as the first country to create these horrible weapons and use them. I think it’s incumbent upon our nation to take the lead in ridding the planet in cooperation with the other nuclear powers and agree to put what remaining we collectively decide to keep for special purposes such as asteroid threatening the planet and what not under the direct control of the UN security council made of the 5 permanent members which US is one of the 5 members and the rotating members of the security council.

Damn! :fearful:

The common denominator is we have dictatorships wanting to dominate the world.
The ccp in many ways is similar to the soviets. Yes they do have a strong economy but a minute slow down has major implications. We have never seen the true repercussions of such slow downs and how it has impacted the local population(s) All of that info has been censored to the outside world. We did hear of on going famines in parts of China. The soviets were powerful too but they did not manage to match our true free economy. The chinese oligarchs are at the mercy of the ccp. Remember Jack Ma?

Similarity?

Can’t forget the dangerous piglet
