University of Houston Magazine

I just received the Spring/Summer edition.

Starting on page 16 it has a lengthy article about our Men’s Basketball Program Titled “ Culture of Champions”.

And on page 17 the author, Shawn Lindsey, writes that “they gutted out a 64-63 win over Duke in the Final Four”.

This is a wonderful 8 page article.

That is factually incorrect about one of our great wins in University history.

Could have just looked it up.

I was disappointed NOT A MENTION no matter how small of the recent legendary Cougar diehard and poster here who passed away, Patrick Moran. I’ve come to expect less from this university but would’ve been a nice touch. The family did send in his biography. Oh well. Some things never change.

Wrong score but thoughtful article. #GOCOOGS

People make mistakes. It’s not a big deal.

An 8 page article and you made a thread on here because she got the score wrong!?

It was a simple and honest mistake. A mistake that had no effect on the entire story and didn’t need to be in there anyways.

I bet she wrote most of that magazine and oversaw its production. Kudos to her for all the hard work.

Also, posting her picture and contact info like she committed some serious crime is a really nice move.:+1:

This magazine represents our entire University.

No one involved read this article and fact-checked it before publication.

Thus it is possible OUR magazine has other inaccuracies.

And it shouldn’t.

It’s a fancy piece of mail sent out to alumni with the goal of getting more people to donate money to the school. Likely put together by a staff of a few people who have other responsibilities for the school… hence the article was written by the VP of Strategic Communications.

Relax. Most people who get the thing just look at the pictures and they sure as heck don’t notice that a score is wrong.

Edit: Here’s the piece if anyone wants to enjoy a great story on our team… while also searching for inaccuracies and proof of AI use.

Errors happen in publishing all the time. It’s why there are “Corrections” and “Retractions” that get issued when mistakes dont get caught. Folks shouldn’t be acting like this is some huge blemish on the university.

What was Patrick’s handle on Fans? I’m hoping he’s not who I’m thinking, but I don’t recall anything about him passing.

I seem to recall it was posted here, but can’t find it just now; nevertheless it’s mentioned here.

I don’t know under what name he used.

He was 98 and deserved to be honored in some way. Yes, Eat 'Em Up.

It means everything else in that magazine and our University is a lie. The cake is a lie.

I remember there was a Patrick ? who posted a lot of good information concerning football. Can’t remember for sure if that was him or not.

That makes it even worse. A junior staffer would write the article and have it proofread for accuracy, maybe by the VP of Strategic Communications. If written by the VP of Strategic Communications, whose job is to put out releases and articles, I expect better…

Coogfans Patrick is alive and well. And missed here. He just has to lie low with his current employment.

Reason for termination: Got the score wrong in the sportsball article.

No, someone who is paid to do their job, which includes accurate information, should have accurate facts. What if the article named a different school or misnamed players participating? Where do you draw the line? I don’t feel that journalism should be graded on a curve.

I never said they deserved termination. But, someone who does write an article, at this level, should be held to a higher standard.
