ouch
No word from UH-land if there are any current players thinking of redshirting and transferring.
Article made it sound like UNLV promised certain NIL and did not come through, so he walks away from a 3-0 team that could make playoffs. He would have a better draft if he goes undefeated and does well in playoffs, unless he is just thinking about today and how much he can make with NIL, not NFL. The choices these kids make.
I don’t know why everyone keeps saying there are no contracts for NIL. I would be highly surprised if there aren’t - especially when they drive off in a corvette or take a $100,000 bank deposit.
As with the last x post, looks like he was provided for and just decided he wanted more. My guess is most likely this is on the athletes. They need to learn what a contract is, also what is a marketing phrase. Someone saying you could earn up to this is not a contract but a marketing phrase. They have seen that in advertising since they were little. Welcome to the adult world - your a pro now so act like it.
As someone else asked - is he turning down his scholarship? or is he still getting classes, tutoring, room and board, medical insurance, etc… Does dropping out of all school affect his ability to transfer per NCAA rules? If he is collecting scholarship and other values, he needs to play. If he is now paying his own way, then more power to him.
It looks like he’s using his redshirt year, to which he is entitled, so that shouldn’t affect either his eligibility for next year, or his scholarship for this year.
Maybe we could consider signing this guy in the transfer portal. Our QB play, as you know, has been less than stellar.
Umm it is considered work.
If it weren’t, then HCs and ADs would be making a lot less money.
UNLV boosters, like the boosters at UF a few years ago, made an NIL promise that they could not keep.
If I start at a job and the offer letter says X, and then after I start working my first pay check says Y, I am leaving.
You better believe that if this happened to the HC, he would do the same thing.
In some ways, this incident supports the position that schools should be in charge of dispensing NIL money as some of these NIL funds are fly by night operations with little control. The Congress and IRS are working on putting some rules out there but as of now with the election on the horizon nothing is likely to happen.
For the most part I agree with your post, but given the dollar value alleged, he definitely should have gotten something in writing.
It’s his word against the coach’s otherwise, and the coach could say something squirly like, “well, I never said he’d make $100K, only that he could make $100K,” or something to that effect.
It’s also possible that the timing of the payment wasn’t discussed.
If a player is gonna chase the money, it’s on him to make sure the deal is solid and the terms are spelled out.
Agreed. He hired an agent and the agent didn’t get the deal in writing? Quit the agent
Gosh, I remember a time when college football was called an amateur sport. Why not quit pretending and call it NFL minor leagues and allow mid season player trades and all that goes with it.
Schools directly contracting with players makes too much sense so probably won’t happen.
There no I in tEaM!
Schools will be getting involved soon because of revenue sharing so this type of BS will be minimized.
I think the experts feel that collective bargaining is on the horizon, promoted by the College Football Players Association. Lots of hurdles to overcome but I think that is the best solution to put some guardrails on this mess.
Sounds like the kid or his parents are getting greedy, they only got an agent after he went 3-0 and saw his stock rise. He beat two B12 teams and has a shot at playoffs.
I didn’t realize college football players could have agents. Not in basketball, agent means you have to go pro
Dang… was looking forward to watching UNLV give boise a run for their money
He wasn’t much of a passer so maybe they’ll be alright.
They have other capable options
