I went with a guy I was having casual sex with, to the Athens Bar and Grill in the early 80’s. His room mate was a Belly Dancer there and we went to see her dance. Well, he got way too drunk and started making out with me. THIS WAS 1983 ! and two guys getting it on was a no no in a dive bar by the ship channel. I tried to get him to cool it, but to no avail and I could feel the temperature in the place rising and the looks from the room were not “compassionate” (to use todays obsession). The only thing that saved us was the fact his room mate danced there so they didn’t grab us by the collar and toss us out. One guy who worked there did come over and whisper in my ear that they were “primarily a heterosexual establishment” (as if I could not tell) and after his room mate danced we left with out getting beat up.
Trying to decide if that sounds better in a Hank Hill voice or Uncle Bob from Urban Cowboy.
Homosexuality an issue in a Greek restaurant? I call bullshite
I guess I am getting old but I am less interested in the casual sex as I am with how was the moussaka.
The only place from the original list I dined at was Vargo’s; nice place back in the day.
Additional places I miss are Strawberry Patch, PappaMias (Pappas short lived foray into Italian cuisine), Boston Sea Party, The Brass Parrot, Gaido’s, and Jimmie Walkers.
I miss Charlie’s Hamburgers. Are any of the locations around?
I miss Crappito’s on Mid Lane. Does anyone remember 2K’s ice cream parlor in the center across from where the Galleria is now? It was over in the little center that was next to Sakowitz.
I miss Crappito’s, too. Celebrated a lot of family events there, going back to when it was Romero’s. I loved their Capellini di Mare.
I was late to the party as far as Crappitos goes, just as I started to visit more often, it was gone.
Without going back through the thread, if it wasn’t mentioned, I really enjoyed The Rotisserie Beef and Bird. Great food, wine list, and service.
I took my charming bride there on our first date and on our anniversary for years. On our anniversary I would have roses awaiting on the table we sat at just inside the door in the little room on the left as you went down the hall to the main dining room. It was table #6. Since it has closed we have gone to Da Vinci Ristorante Italiano in Katy.
When I first started going to Crappitos it was called Romero’s and was owned by Thomas Romero, a UH alumnus. I can’t remember when it changed.
Rotisserie for Beef and Bird was top notch, as was Charley’s 517.
Vargo’s had great atmosphere and some amazing grounds and peacocks, but the food……meh……for the price and genre, there were better. Nice dinner rolls though!
59 Diner was our go to spot back in the day. My brother informed me that it closes a few years back. That sucks.
It had gone downhill years back
Ate at alfreds in1974 before the super bowl at rice stadium
Great list. How about Cavatorre’s in the Heights? We enjoy Friday and Saturday nights. They have some great piano players, sometimes singers who do Broadway songs. Great Italian food. And in a similar vein I would suggest Sorrento’s on Westheimer.
Cavatorre’s is alive and well. Still hit it up on occasion. Pretty decent Caesar salad.
Rotisserie for Beef and Bird was where my date and I went for our prom dinner, it was amazing.
In the 1980s Phil’s Restaurant (also known as 59 Diner) off 59 and Farnham was a place to go for large chicken-fried steaks, large milkshakes and large glasses of ice tea.
On the wall at 59 it said “The best place to get a chicken fried steak is 59 Diner and Phil"s”
You had to know the history to get the joke. In LA if i want a chicken fried steak i have to go to Denny’s… Ugh. Where do you go now in Houston? The last good chicken fried steak i had was at place called Pecos in Ft. Stockton TX.
