It’s LAUGHABLE.

As I said, Hall of Fame head coaches don’t accept demotions to DC.

read the second line on his Wiki page.

He wasn’t even as high as a DC
he was a “Special Assistant to the HC”
at at one of his rivals.

Special Assistant is a great job.

It’s like being a consultant.

That’s a perfect job for a Hall of Fame coach if they don’t want a HC job.

Coordinator is a different story.

Being an advisor to another P5 coach is one thing.

Having to answer to a coach with NO prior P5 coaching experience is quite another.

One is a consulting job. Almost flattering you for your advice. The other is a DEMOTION.

He will get into the Hall of Fame, no doubt

If he had an offset in his payout, then this may avoid the loss of income.

At most schools with organized alumni like most schools in the SEC the coach doesn’t have to say anything except “yep we really want that young man”
Coaches at agy never have to say a word to their cult
same at Texas

If it’s Patterson, can we bring Purple Jacket Guy to the Intro ??

For those who weren’t there

Purple Jacket Guy —

It was December 14, 2007 at the Athletics/Alumni Center.

We had just lost Arthur “Nothing Has Changed” Briles to Baylor and we were pretty bummed.

But “Uncle Dave” (AD Dave Maggard) had come up with Kevin Sumlin, an impressive replacement from Bob Stoops OU staff.

Maggard introduced Sumlin as new head coach. Sumlin spoke. Big crowd. Everyone pumped. And Dave asks “Any questions?”

Before anyone, including a sizeable press corps, can ask anything intelligent, this guy in a purple windbreaker near the front looks at Coach Sumlin and says “How many hands does it take to catch a football?”

Sumlin doesn’t know what to say

So Purple Jacket Guy repeats his question forcefully “HOW MANY HANDS DOES IT TAKE TO CATCH A FOOTBALL?” and he leans into it holding his hands in a basket like he’s catching a pass as if he needs to show Sumlin what he’s talking about.

And Sumlin looks around for help like “Wha-a-a? Is this some weird Coog lore I don’t know yet?”

Then Purple Jacket Guy turns to Coach Yeoman in the front row and asks HIM
“Coach! How many hands does it take to catch a football?”

Yeoman says “Two?” And Purple Jacket Guy says “NO! It takes TWENTY-TWO hands to catch a football.” (i.e., eleven men — the whole team.)

Everybody groans.

Needless to say, it was a major buzz-kill on the whole event. It wrapped up shortly after that, and we’ll never forget Purple Jacket Guy.

People keep talking about Patterson burning out, that didn’t really happen at TCU, it was more of a blow up that was building. He is always going to work hard and be dedicated, he is just set in his ways which don’t work anymore. He was extremely abrasive his last season, far worse than Dana in press conferences. Just like Dana, nothing was his fault and any questions from media about doing something different, he would get mad. He has a huge ego and is very stubborn in his ways.

I just don’t believe that two years has all of a sudden made him adapt to the modern landscape of college football and be willing to change what he does. Luckily to that first answer, I don’t see him getting hired because he wont make a good impression with Tilman.

Nothing has changed recently in college football. Indeed, good defense against spread offenses and run/pass option was pioneered by Patterson and a small handful of other coaches.

I had never seen the images of “purple jacket guy”. In my mind, it was always hubcap guy with a purple jacket over the hubcap. Disappointing.

Probably the most bizarre thing I have ever seen at a press conference. Yes, it will live in Cougar lore forever.

Takes at least 40 hands in the Big 12 man

Yeah those little things like NIL, transfer portal, social media, and the increase in egos because of all that has changed quite a bit.

Patterson for AD?

Educate me. Other than PRK, does the T Man “get along” with the remainder of the current athletic staff, in particular the P man? At his level, I doubt that “getting along” is among his top 10 mantras for support to anything.

I don’t know, just passing along what I was told
