Lamar. Wow. Sad.
Lamar has a good program and that guy can be had for a relative discount. Could do a lot worse. They are playing for a conference title right now
Lamar vs.
Quad 1: 1-7 (beat Kansas, swept by Oregon St., losses to Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and South Alabama)
Quad 2: 1-1 (lost to Rice, beat La. Tech)
Quad 3: 17–13
Quad 4: 15-5
Series Sweeps: UTRGV (RPI 101), Northwestern St. (RPI 157)
One thing that sticks out about this year is they played extra innings in 9 games, went 6-3.
I understand Whitting did not get it done, but when Joey Mcquire took TT to the playoffs it was said because he had the #1 NIL budget, not that he was a great coach. CTW was last in B12 and no one mentions UH was last in B12 baseball NIL. The sad thing about college athletics, it is now all about NIL, even CKS says so.
It’s worse than professional sports. These cats get scholarships, room and board, and NIL. They’re also free agents every single year.
Did you read any of the thread above?
TW driving this program into the ground had nothing to do with NIL.
And comparing Football and Baseball is apples to oranges.
I have been trying to watch the big 12 baseball tournament, but it is hard to stay interested when you do not have a dog in the fight.
I’m more interested in looking for a new coach.
We most likely wouldn’t have that problem if Pezman would have done what so obviously should have been done after the 2021 season. ![]()
Then we would have been relying on Pezman to hire a baseball coach. Its 50/50 (at best) wed be better off right now if he did.
I’m not much of a baseball guy so I’m learning a lot about the coaching landscape thanks to you guys. Just saw Lamar won the sun belt tournament. Their coach doesn’t seem to be a popular choice on UH forums. If he gets selected as the guy how disappointed will y’all be?
Extremely.
It wouldn’t inspire me to attend any games next year.
The Southland is a one bid conference with only three teams in the top 100 this year. Southeastern Louisiana is the highest ranked at 76. Winning their tourney is no big deal. Someone has to do it.
Lamar has never finished in the top 50 in the eight seasons Davis has been HC. I’d prefer a coach who never finished below 50 in a conference that weak.
Willie Fritz is cut from the same cloth - you need guys who know how to win at times without shiny toys
Reason why the Southland is down is because the P4 teams whined about scholarship limitations constantly and increased the cap to take guys who would’ve been great players over there
It was no coincidence Sam Houston dominated because of that -
Lamar did have a great crowd for their title game.
See here.

Their coach may have generated some buzz.
Replace Whitting with a very similar type

I like Will Davis. If he’s the hire, I think he has a great chance to be successful. Here’s why:
His overall resume. For where UH Baseball is right now, he fits the profile of what I think is a good and reasonable candidate for UH.
He’s a young and (presumably) hungry coach with an ascending trajectory. UH would be a great opportunity and a natural progression in his career.
19 guys on the Lamar roster are from the Greater Houston Area (included the Golden Triangle and Brenham in there). So clearly he’s successfully built the local recruiting network we all want to see.
For me, the single most frustrating thing about UH Baseball has been the poor pitching. Look at Lamar’s Southland Conference rankings for the last three seasons:
2026: 2nd of 11
2025: 2nd of 11
2024: 1st of 9
I like that his success - sustained success - is at a school like Lamar, where things don’t come easy.
Caveat: Whoever the next coach is, if we want to be in the top quarter of B12 baseball programs, UH Baseball absolutely has to do better with NIL and continuing to improve the ballpark. If we can’t step it up, the floundering will continue regardless of the coach.
Don’t bring logic to the conversation.
I can tell you this much, I’ve never seen such hostility to a UH hire, nor have I seen a greater infatuation for a guy we didn’t hire, even when no other school has ever seen fit to so much as offer that guy a HC job all these years.
About the only thing comparable I’ve seen was the uproar over hiring Alvin Brooks back in the 1990s, which, to be fair, proved justified. But then again, Brooks never had a prior track record as a successful D1 head coach when he was hired. Davis does, so those situations aren’t the same, in my view, and as such, don’t merit similar outrage.
Speaking of logic, I tried to reason with folks on two different strings that both got shut down, so maybe I shouldn’t go on.
But it’s obvious that all the logic in the world won’t sway certain people’s views on this.
Some here seem to be prepared to hold this new guy to a standard to which even Sampson and Fritz weren’t held (improvement in the first year).
He deserves at least one freebie sucky season, and a minimum of two years for evaluation.
